Find a Mentor.

When you travel through strange lands it is reassuring and simplifies things to have a guide who knows the way. There is an old saying that when the student is ready, the teacher appears. Although this is true, both can have a different conception about the preparation in particular and about the universe in general. It is evident that the process of searching for a teacher can be part of the fine-tuning.

A teacher's personal qualities are as important as his or her knowledge of meditation. If the meditation is really going well for him, it is noticeable in his personality. This does not mean that they are necessarily radiant beings of light, very few are, but they are probably perceived to have a peculiar compassion, and that they have power without, as a result, trying to control or manipulate others.

A good teacher will make suggestions to his pupil, but he will not be angry if he does not follow them, nor will he try at all to manage his life. A good teacher can also, if the pupil ignores his indications, say that there is no make sense in continuing to waste time together.

A good teacher can charge a reasonable amount, a very classic term, for his teaching time. Meditation is priceless, but today time is worth money and people need to make a living. Those who are not willing to pay a certain amount probably do not value much what is offered to them. Without losing sight of this, be wary of anyone who offers you fulminant enlightenment for large sums of money. I don't think it's even worth bothering to see someone like that. This would also be very cautious of anyone who would make you sign a long-term contract for the courses, or charge you large amounts of money up front.

Many people who teach meditation techniques do so as part of their religious philosophy. To those who do not profess the same religion, it may seem a little strange or even uncomfortable. If you belong to a formal religious community, you may feel more comfortable with a teacher of the same religion, whether the meditation is taught as part of a religious practice.

The one who meditates a while on his own will know better his needs and goals, and thus will know how to determine if there is a teacher or a specific type of meditation that suits him better. The teacher who does well will harmonize with his own inner teacher, even when both disconcert or frustrate him.

It may be the case that we live in a place where it is impossible to have a teacher, and I am not only referring to the case of people who, for example, live in a lighthouse, but also to those who live in a community where there is no teacher available. Let us remember the advantages of working with others in an existing meditation group, or forming a new one.

I really liked your publication. I have a situation in which the negative energy invades me a lot, and I really want to improve and learn, but my mind plays against me a lot with procrastination, destructive thoughts, etc. Lack of self-confidence is a big problem too. How to avoid this evil part that constantly sabotages against the teaching I am receiving?

It's surely cure saying, but how true can it be? It does remind me of this other Chinese saying "you build the city and people will come". And things do not exactly work like that :)
