It seemed like just yesterday that she had held her daughter in her arms and that photo had been taken; she was happy to see her little baby growing every day. María and Elena, mother and daughter, had always been very close. Elena’s father had died when she was six in a suspicious accident that was never solved.
Elena, now 14, was eagerly awaiting her 15th birthday; it would be a beautiful party—perhaps not overflowing with luxury, but her mother had been saving since the day she was born to celebrate this occasion.
For her part, María never remarried; she was a beautiful woman who never lacked suitors, but, thinking of her daughter’s well-being, she turned them all down, knowing that men sometimes set their sights on the charms of young teenage girls. Her firm intention was to care for her daughter in every way; moreover, she felt she no longer needed a man’s help for the two of them to get by.
Among those still pursuing her was Manuel; he had always been the most persistent of all those who had ever offered her love. In fact, he was an excellent photographer, and he was the one who took that black-and-white photo of mother and daughter together.
But there was something about this mysterious man that María couldn’t quite warm up to, and as time went on and Elena grew up, she didn’t trust him either. Both of them said that behind that kind face and smile there seemed to be something more; he didn’t seem entirely sincere; deep down, something about him seemed dark.
The closer Elena’s birthday got, the more Manuel insisted on winning María’s companionship and love, to the point where she felt harassed, since his persistence bordered on obsession.
Part of the preparations for the party involved finding a professional photographer to capture her daughter’s joy during the celebration; one of these professionals sent her a message warning her that Manuel wasn’t just a photographer—he was a dark sorcerer who used to capture in photographs the women he loved but couldn’t have, those he was obsessed with, and even those he had grown tired of. Furthermore, she was told that he was very likely responsible for her husband’s death.
María thought it was a very distasteful joke, but she couldn’t stop thinking that her gut feeling had always warned her that Manuel was a dangerous man—not the kind, friendly person he pretended to be—so she decided to plan her move away after Elena’s 15th birthday party.
But what María didn’t know was that Manuel already had her in his clutches, for if he didn’t win her love by the day before Elena’s 15th birthday at the latest, both of them would be trapped in that photograph he had taken—and they would remain trapped there until she agreed to be his.
And so María and Elena are trapped in that beautiful photo that their sinister captor keeps alongside so many others; only a few suspect what happened to them, but nothing is certain. Manuel enters his studio, looks at the photos, and listens to the voices of his many prisoners; there, he reveals his true smile—a wicked one.
