the trailer
Tuner, which is a crime thriller movie, is directed by Daniel Roher. The movie is anchored by strong performances from Leo Woodall, known as Niki White in the movie, and Dustin Hoffman. The movie balances criminal suspense with human intimacy.
Niki White in this movie is a lone, socially reserved young man working as a skilled piano tuner. He lives with an extreme, yet painful sensitivity to everyday sounds, yet with a gift of absolute perfect pitch. His quiet world revolves around his aging mentor Harry, who is Dustin Hoffman, and his wife.
When Niki demonstrated his usual skill by opening Harry's forgotten safe just by listening to the internal tumblers drop, it set off an unexpected chain of events. Shortly after, when Harry suffered a heart attack, crushed by medical bill debt to keep Harry alive, Niki stumbled into a robbery mid-job.
The escalation started when Uri, who was impressed by Niki's silent, ear-guided talent, recruited him to operate in opening high-security safes. Desperate for cash, he reluctantly agreed.
The climax and conflict arose as the heists grew riskier. His life collided with threats endangering his relationship and putting his already fragile hearing in grave physical risk.
The movie started at a slow pace, taking time to build Niki's isolated auditory universe. Once Uri dragged Niki into the heist world, the pacing accelerated smoothly. The tension was driven not by car chases, but by silence and precision, and suspense was built around delicate physical acts. While the movie is set across shadowy, cold suburban interiors and upscale urban estates, Tuner frames ordinary environments through soundscapes.
One thing that stands out in the movie is the immersive sound design, the lead performance of Leo Woodall as a reluctant criminal, and Hoffman's emotional depth as the aging mentor. Rather than relying on high-tech gadgets, the central skill is purely organic, intimate, and human.
One criticism is the coincidences in the act; a few plot turns in the final act rely on coincidental crossovers between Niki's personal life and his heist targets that require a slight suspension of disbelief.
What makes the movie catchy are: Unlike cold heist thrillers, Niki's motivation is driven by affection for his mentor rather than greed, giving the crime narrative a genuine emotional anchor. The film turns quietness into an action sequence. Audience engagement comes from leaning in to hear the same micro-clicks the protagonist is searching for.
If you want a movie that keeps you engaged, Tuner does it.
