A SECOND HENRY

✍ written on scrobble.life

Seeing this prompt made me actualy imagine... what if someone told me tomorrow that science had finally reached a point where I could create a perfect clone of myself... I honestly don't know if I would be excited or terrified because the idea sounds incredible but then Imagine another version of me walking around with my face.. my voice.. my memories.. my experiences.. my childhood stories.. my embarrassing moments.. my successes and even my failures.

Imagine sitting across from someone who knows everything I know because in some strange way he is me.. A second Henry.

But then I start asking the question that makes the whole thing uncomfortable.

Would he actually be me?

Let's say scientists take every memory inside my brain and transfer it into this new body. He remembers my childhood. He remembers the people I love. He remembers my mistakes. He knows my favorite things... He remembers conversations I have had and experiences I have lived through..

And if he opens his eyes and says, "I'm Henry," what exactly would make him wrong?

That is where the whole idea becomes frightening.

Because I don't think memories alone make a person. There is something about being alive that cannot easily be reduced to information. There is the feeling of waking up in the morning. The way a particular song can suddenly take you back to a moment from years ago. The way your heart reacts before your mind has finished processing something. The things you don't remember but that somehow shaped the person you became.

And then there is consciousness. The strange experience of being me.

Nobody has ever been able to fully explain what it means to experience life from inside your own mind. So if my clone has all my memories but opens his eyes in another body, I have to wonder whether his consciousness would actually continue mine or whether a completely new consciousness would simply inherit my history.

Maybe he would genuinely believe he was me. Maybe everyone else would believe he was me. But would I?

That question raises alot in my mind.. Imagine I die tonight and my clone wakes up tomorrow... My mom sees him. My friends see him. He tells them the same stories I would have told them. He laughs at the same jokes. He remembers the same people. He knows things only I should know.

Would they say Henry survived? Or would they simply be comforting themselves with a remarkably convincing replacement?... I honestly think that's where I would draw the line because I don't want another person carrying my memories.... I want to keep living my own life.

There is also something about mortality that we don't like admitting. Death is frightening precisely because it is final. We don't know what comes after it, and because we don't know, humanity has spent centuries trying to find ways around it.

Maybe cloning would simply be another expression of that fear... We don't necessarily want to live forever because life itself is perfect but Sometimes we just aren't ready to let go. I understand that.

I have dreams I haven't achieved yet.. Places I haven't visited.. Conversations I haven't had... People I still want to make proud... There are experiences I haven't even imagined yet.

So yes... if science gave me the opportunity to create a second Henry... part of me would be curious about What he would become? Would he make the same decisions? Would he have the same weaknesses? Would he become a better version of me? Would he make completely different choices despite having my memories?

Those questions would be fascinating. But I don't think I would transfer my consciousness into him simply to escape death. Because if I have to disappear for another Henry to continue, then it isn't really my continuation. It's his life.

Maybe what matters is what we leave behind....the people we loved, the lives we touched, the mistakes we learned from, the lessons we passed on and even the memories other people carry after we are gone..

Maybe the beauty of being human isn't that we can find a way to continue forever... Maybe it's that we know our time is limited... and we choose to make it count.

If you died and your family get to be with the clone, I also can't really say how they will feel... Will they be satisfied with the clone or feed sad the real you is gone.. but then the clone has all your memory and that way he can really live like you... Maybe they can even mistake him to be you if they didn't know you die and he didn't tell them he is your clone...
