Earlier this year, NASA launched the Artemis II mission to the Moon, and I was amazed by how everything played out, which led me to watch the Korean movie The Moon because I wanted to see what it's like to go to the Moon. This movie was released in 2023, which means they took iit drew on other scientific explorations of the Moon.
This movie is about the Korean government going to the Moon again after their first attempt failed. The first set of astronauts who went to the Moon didn't return; they had issues and died in space.
Again, it's time to go to the Moon, and three astronauts are trained for months before the takeoff day. The takeoff happens, all hands are on deck, and they remain in good communication with the team as they move towards the Moon. Just when they're in space and seeing the orbit of the Moon, the space wind takes a strong blow and affects the spacecraft. They have to check and fix the abnormalities, and hey, this is the part where I started falling in love with the movie. I'm still in doubt about whether the movie wasn't actually shot in space. Everything appeared so real.
Hwang Sun-Woo, who's their pilot, stays inside the craft to control its functions while the two others go outside to check the issue. They are well kitted with their oxygen tanks plugged in and a rope hooked to their bodies in case of an accidental fall. In the process, two of them give up when their oxygen runs out due to the cracks and the impact of their falls. It remains Hwang Sun-Woo on the journey. He is stranded in the spacecraft in space, not knowing whether to continue in case the issue gets fixed or just find a way to return to Earth.
Well, he succeeds in landing on the Moon, and he goes on to find a chemical substance located in a particular part of the Moon...
The effects in this movie are so good and realistic that one would think the movie was actually acted in space.
The fact that NASA, the American body of astronomy, was incorporated into the movie is a whole lot of beauty. Although, like I noticed and didn't like, the American scenes appeared odd most of the time, maybe because I expected to hear Korean being spoken there too.
I expected to see a splashdown, which usually comes with the fiery heat while descending to Earth at high speed, but that part was never shown. We just blinked, and everyone was jubilating already over a safe trip back to Earth. Oh! Did I just spoil it? No. There was a survivor who arrived home, but the twist will get you hooked, with the adrenaline begging to be stable.
I would rate it 8/10
