Project Hail Mary - Movie Review [ES - EN]

"Project Hail Mary", película de ciencia ficción estrenada en las salas de cine el pasado mes de marzo y actualmente se puede disfrutar en Amazon Prime Video, puede considerarse como una de las grandes sorpresas de este año. El film está basado en la novela del mismo nombre escrita por el novelista estadounidense Andy Weir, la cual relata la historia de "Ryland Grace", un profesor de escuela con una especialidad en biología molecular, lo cual genera interés en un grupo de científicos, quienes trabajan en intentar resolver una gran problemática que enfrenta la humanidad; eso le llevará a ser parte de una misión espacial llena de esperanza y sacrificio para encontrar la manera de salvar no solamente a la Tierra, sino a todo el sistema solar.

"Project Hail Mary", a science fiction film that premiered in theaters last March and is currently available on Amazon Prime Video, can be considered one of this year’s biggest surprises. The film is based on the novel of the same name by American author Andy Weir, which tells the story of “Ryland Grace,” a high school teacher specializing in molecular biology, whose expertise piques the interest of a group of scientists working to solve a major problem facing humanity; This leads him to become part of a space mission filled with hope and sacrifice, aimed at finding a way to save not only Earth but the entire solar system.

Esta película fue dirigida por Phil Lord y Christopher Miller, quienes han dirigido en exitosos filmes como son "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" (2009) y "The Lego Movie" (2014), ambas producciones animadas, así como otras películas, comedias de acción, como fueron "21 Jump Street" (2012) y la secuela, "22 Jump Street" (2014); eso hace que Project Holy Mary, sea el tercer largo metraje de acción-real en la carrera de este duo de directores; la acotación hecha con respecto a los anteriores trabajos de Lord y Miller, es a causa de que mientras veía este film, no podía dejar de pensar que si se hubiera hecho como una producción animada, también hubiera funcionado muy bien y eso proviene a como ellos implementaron una paleta de colores fuertes en las escenografías, pero también en los personajes, así como las gestulidades e interpretación de los actores al ser netamente caricaturescos. El trabajo de cámara en donde tenemos una perspectiva de estar flotando y girando, no solo en las escenas dentro o afuera de la nave, sino en los flashbacks, fue una decisión acertada porque, repito, es tener perspectiva de cómo el personaje principal va recordando todo hecho previo que lo llevó al lugar donde él está. Creo que, sin tener un extenso gasto para no hacer un universo más grande, los llevó a enfocarse o desarrollar la historia en la nave terrícola; eso facilitó el trabajo de ambos directores, pero creo que de igual manera tomaron las decisiones adecuadas para hacer funcionar el relato sin hacer una película aburrida con escenas repetitivas.

This film was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who have directed successful films such as "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" (2009) and "The Lego Movie" (2014), both animated productions, as well as other films, such as the action comedies “21 Jump Street” (2012) and its sequel, “22 Jump Street” (2014); this makes Project Holy Mary the third live-action feature film in this directing duo’s career; the reference to _** Lord** and Miller stems from the fact that, while watching this film, I couldn’t help but think that if it had been made as an animated production, it would have worked just as well—and that’s due to how they implemented a bold color palette in the sets, as well as in the characters, and how the actors’ gestures and performances were distinctly cartoonish. The camerawork, which gives us the sensation of floating and spinning—not only in the scenes inside or outside the ship but also in the flashbacks—was a wise decision because, as I said, it provides a sense of how the main character is recalling all the previous events that led him to where he is now. I think that, by avoiding a massive budget that would have created an even larger universe, they were able to focus on and develop the story within the Earth-bound spacecraft; that made the directors’ work easier, but I also believe they made the right decisions to make the narrative work without creating a boring film with repetitive scenes.

A pesar de no tener conocimiento de cómo originalmente se desarrolla esta historia en el material original y sobre qué decisiones habrán tomado en su adaptación, me gustó el tono ligero, humorista y sí, hasta dramático que usó Drew Goddard en el guion. No hay duda de que uno de los temas principales de este film corresponde a la valentía: el hecho de enfrentar obstáculos cada vez más difíciles; no hay duda de que primeramente debes ser valiente para dar un paso a la vez y lo otro es contar con la compañía necesaria para generar motivación y todo eso es una característica de este film, el cual tiene uno de los mensajes más positivos que he visto en una película desde hace varios meses. Creo que la inexistencia de un villano visible la hace mucho mejor porque se desarrollan aspectos del personaje principal que seguramente cada quien sueña con experimentar; me refiero a las dudas y posteriormente a la convicción de tener la capacidad para resolver un problema. En mi opinión, ese es uno de los grandes mensajes que ofrece esta maravillosa película. 

Although I’m not familiar with how this story originally unfolds in the source material or what decisions were made in adapting it, I liked the lighthearted, humorous—and yes, even dramatic—tone that Drew Goddard used in the screenplay. There’s no doubt that one of the main themes of this film is courage: the act of facing increasingly difficult obstacles; there’s no doubt that first and foremost you must be brave enough to take one step at a time, and the other is having the right company to provide motivation—and all of that is a hallmark of this film, which conveys one of the most positive messages I’ve seen in a movie in several months. I think the absence of a visible villain makes it much better because it explores aspects of the main character that surely everyone dreams of experiencing; I’m referring to the doubts and, later, the conviction that one has the ability to solve a problem. In my opinion, that’s one of the great messages this wonderful movie offers.

El hecho de que los personajes tengan una interpretación caricaturesca no quiere decir que exista una sobreactuación o exageración; en mi opinión, es imposible no conectar con cada uno, sin importar qué tanto tiempo tengan en la película. El trabajo de Ryan Gosling es excelente; es un hombre que sabe de su potencial, especialmente de su conocimiento y de la manera en enseñarlo, pero que ha decidido ofrecerlo a un grupo de niños en vez de a todo el mundo, pero eso no evita que una sola persona crea en él, lo cual da inicio a toda su aventura. Como dije antes, esta es una película sobre valentía y a la vez con un mensaje positivo, y creo que eso es debido a lo que emite el personaje de "Ryland Grace", un hombre que no teme el ser motivado para demostrar esa valentía. Con respecto a los demás personajes, el interpretado por Sandra Hüller, "Eva Stratt", quien es la jefa (por así decirlo) de la fuerza especial detrás del proyecto; me pareció genial porque es ese personaje que con pocas palabras demuestra convicción y liderazgo, lo cual es muy divertido y a la vez muy necesario porque es un impulsor para Ryland; algo parecido sucede con "Rocky", quien también demuestra convicción, sin ningún filtro, pero eso sí, es un explorador, alguien lleno de preguntas, pero a la vez es un amigo condicional, una gran pieza en toda esta historia, otro gran personaje y también protagonista principal; James Ortiz, actor que lo interpreta, hizo un gran trabajo.

The fact that the characters are portrayed in a caricatured way doesn't mean there's any overacting or exaggeration; in my opinion, it's impossible not to connect with each one, no matter how much screen time they have. Ryan Gosling’s performance is excellent; he plays a man who is aware of his potential—especially his knowledge and his ability to teach—but who has decided to share it with a group of children rather than the whole world. Yet this doesn’t stop even a single person from believing in him, which sets off his entire adventure. As I said before, this is a film about courage that also carries a positive message, and I think that’s due to what the character of “Ryland Grace” conveys—a man who isn’t afraid to be inspired to demonstrate that courage. As for the other characters, the one played by Sandra Hüller, “Eva Stratt”—who is the leader (so to speak) of the special task force behind the project—I thought she was great because she’s the kind of character who, with few words, demonstrates conviction and leadership. This is both entertaining and necessary, as she serves as a driving force for Ryland; something similar happens with “Rocky,” who also shows conviction, without any filters, but he’s an explorer—someone full of questions—and at the same time a conditional friend, a key piece in this whole story, another great character and also a main protagonist; James Ortiz, the actor who plays him, did a great job.

Project Hail Mary es de esas películas de las cuales no había visto ni un minuto del tráiler promocional; tenía el conocimiento de relatar la historia de un astronauta que es parte de la misión para salvar al mundo y posiblemente de ser una historia poco original, lo cual no generó en mí la necesidad de verla de manera inmediata, ni en las salas de cine o en la comodidad de mi hogar, pero al momento de verla y disfrutarla, no dejé de pensar cómo la hubiera disfrutado viéndola en la gran pantalla. Siendo sincero, este es el tipo de película necesaria de ver; el mensaje positivo y esperanzador es lo mejor del film. Lo divertido del relato de un hombre que se ve solitario en una misión muy difícil de realizar y que debe conectar con lo desconocido para poder conseguir su cometido, demuestra humildad y (repito) valentía para impulsar un número de sucesos que podrán finalizar con un gran éxito; eso me dejó esta maravillosa película que espero pronto volver a ver y no hay duda de que es una de las mejores en este año.

Project Hail Mary is one of those movies where I hadn't seen even a minute of the trailer; I knew it told the story of an astronaut who is part of a mission to save the world and that it might be a somewhat unoriginal story, which didn’t make me feel the need to see it right away—neither in theaters nor from the comfort of my home—but once I watched it and enjoyed it, I couldn’t stop thinking about how much I would have enjoyed seeing it on the big screen. To be honest, this is the kind of movie you need to see; the positive and hopeful message is the best part of the film. The appeal of the story—about a man who finds himself alone on a very difficult mission and must connect with the unknown to achieve his goal—shows humility and (I repeat) courage in setting in motion a series of events that could lead to great success; that’s what this wonderful movie left me with, and I hope to watch it again soon. There’s no doubt that it’s one of the best films of the year.
