Plot
This third season begins by showing us the seemingly “quiet” life being led by the twin protagonists, Aqua and Ruby. Following the shocking and emotional finale of the previous season, we see Aqua spending more quality time with his newly official girlfriend, Akane, while Ruby has begun to develop a darker and less innocent personality than usual. Their days revolve around concerts, recordings, interviews, TV shows, and many other things. However, the dark truth behind their mother’s death will begin to come to light.

I don’t know why I didn’t talk more about this anime before, especially since it was one of the first animes I reviewed for you when I started here at Hive. It’s already been two years since I posted my review of the first season of Oshi no Ko, and now that I’m rereading it, I really regret that it was so poorly written and so short. But anyway, aside from realizing how much my reviews have improved over these past two years, another thing I noticed was that I never wrote a review for the second season.
So to make up for that, today I’m bringing you a review of the most recent third season, which also aired earlier this year. Oshi no Ko has not only become a viral anime since the premiere of its first episode back in 2023, but it has also been the subject of many opinions, critiques, and discussions about its plot, its characters, and its controversial ending. However, this doesn’t change the fact that its premise and unforgettable beginning were what caught my attention the most and had me hooked from the very first episode.
No sé por qué no hablé más sobre este anime antes, sobre todo al recordar que fue de los primeros animes que llegué a reseñar para ustedes cuando empecé aquí en Hive. Ya fue hace dos años que les traje la reseña de la primera temporada de Oshi no Ko y que, actualmente al volverla a leer, me arrepiento mucho de haberlo hecho tan mal y tan corto. Pero bueno, aparte de darme cuenta de lo mucho que he mejorado en mis reseñas en estos dos años, otra cosa que noté fue que nunca le hice una reseña a su segunda temporada.
Así que para compensar esto, les traigo hoy la reseña de la más reciente tercera temporada que fue emitida también a principios de este año. Oshi no Ko no solo se ha vuelto un anime viral desde la emisión de su primer episodio por allá por el año 2023, sino que ha sido también el centro de muchas opiniones, críticas y discusiones sobre su trama, sus personajes y su polémico final. Sin embargo, esto no quita el hecho de que su premisa e inolvidable inicio fue lo que más me llamó la atención y que me llegó a enganchar desde su primer episodio.

One thing I will admit is that the second season of Oshi no Ko wasn’t as impactful or interesting as its fantastic first season. Although, of course, that first season has a beginning that’s simply hard to match. However, this third season features a series of events and plot twists that amp up the excitement and drama we’ve been expecting from the very beginning. I understand that the series doesn’t just aim to give us a story full of mysteries and drama surrounding Ai Hoshino’s death and the true father of her twin children.
It also takes its time to show us every detail of the dark side of the entertainment world. Returning to the second season, we see how a good portion of its dozen episodes were devoted to showing us all the behind-the-scenes action of a play in which some of the main characters are part of the cast. But beyond seeing how the obsession and competitiveness in this world negatively affect the actors and stars, we see nothing more than a small revelation at the end tied to Aqua’s goal.
Algo que sí voy a admitir es que la segunda temporada de Oshi no Ko no fue tan impactante o interesante que su grandiosa primera temporada. Aunque, claro, dicha primera temporada tiene un inicio que simplemente es difícil de igualar. Sin embargo, esta tercera temporada cuenta con una serie de eventos y giros de trama que elevan la emoción y el drama que uno esperaba siempre desde un principio. Entiendo que la obra no solo busca darnos una historia repleta de misterios y drama relacionado con la muerte de Ai Hoshino y el verdadero padre de sus hijos gemelos.
Sino que también vemos que se toma su tiempo para mostrarnos cada detalle del lado oscuro del mundo del entretenimiento. Volviendo con la segunda temporada, vemos cómo una buena parte de su docena de episodios se dedicaron a mostrarnos todo el detrás de sala de una obra teatral donde algunos de los personajes principales forman parte del elenco. Pero más allá de ver cómo la obsesión y la competitividad que hay en este mundo afecta negativamente a los actores y estrellas, no vemos nada más allá de una pequeña revelación al final ligado con el objetivo de Aqua.

On the other hand, in this third season, we see that all the changes that took place at the end of the second season didn’t last long. We also see a very different side of Ruby’s personality and way of thinking, and she gets more screen time. But the most interesting part is seeing how Aqua’s period of “peace and happiness” with Akane is short-lived, while the truth about her mother’s murder comes to light in a rather intriguing way. We also get the long-awaited appearance of the twins’ real father, who makes a rather grim and dark entrance.
What’s curious about this is how we can notice a certain similarity between Aqua, Ruby, their parents, and the rest of the stars, idols, and young artists we meet in this anime. The vast majority—if not all—have certain issues with self-esteem, personality, and a somewhat distorted way of thinking and viewing the world we know here. The psychological themes explored in this story are also quite interesting, as we not only see how the siblings’ mindsets become increasingly corrupted as they discover the truth behind their mother’s death.
Por otro lado, en esta tercera temporada vemos que todo el cambio que hubo al final de la segunda temporada no duró mucho. Además de que vemos un lado muy distinto de la personalidad y forma de pensar de Ruby quien también tiene más tiempo en pantalla. Pero lo más interesante es ver cómo ese tiempo de “paz y felicidad” que tiene Aqua con Akane dura poco a su vez que la verdad sobre el asesinato de su madre sale a la luz de una forma un tanto interesante. También tenemos la aparición tan esperada del verdadero padre de los gemelos, quien nos da una introducción bastante tétrica y oscura.
Lo curioso de esto es cómo podemos notar una cierta similitud entre Aqua, Rubi, sus padres y el resto de estrellas, Idols y artistas jóvenes que conocemos en este anime. La gran mayoría, por no decir todos, tienen ciertos problemas de autoestima, personalidad, forma de pensar y ver el mundo que conocemos aquí de una manera un tanto trastornada. El tema psicológico que tocan en esta historia es bastante interesante también, ya que no solo vemos cómo la mentalidad de los hermanos se va corrompiendo a medida que descubren la realidad de la muerte de su madre.

But we also see this in the other characters, starting, for example, with Kana Arima, whom we’ve known since the first season as the young artist who rose to fame when she was barely a child. Yet as an adult, she has to scour the market for any minor gig just to scrape by. Through her example, we see that each character tells a different story, offering a very personal perspective on what the entertainment industry is really like. Exploitative contracts, manipulation, abuse, competition, and deception are part of everyday life here.
While we see that in some cases this anime has no qualms about showing us graphic or gory scenes and somewhat disturbing moments, I still think it offers a somewhat naive view of the entertainment industry. Clearly, reality always surpasses fiction, but as its primary source of inspiration, Oshi no Ko incorporates many of those dark and dramatic elements into its story. Yet even when it depicts certain cases of abuse and other sensitive issues, the anime fails to offer anything beyond a superficial portrayal.
Sino que también lo vemos en el resto de los personajes, empezando por ejemplo con el caso de Kana Arima quien desde la primera temporada la vemos cómo la joven artista que llegó a la fama cuando apenas era una niña. Pero que después de grande tiene que rebuscar entre cualquier oferta menor para mantenerse apenas. Es así como con su ejemplo notamos que cada personaje nos cuenta una historia diferente con una visión muy personal de cómo es el mundo del espectáculo realmente. Contratos explotadores, manipulación, abusos, competición y engaños son parte del pan de cada día aquí.
Si bien vemos que en algunos casos este anime no tiene problemas con mostrarnos escenas gráficas o repletas de gore y escenas algo perturbadoras, aún pienso que es una visión un tanto inocente de dicho mundo del espectáculo. Claramente la realidad siempre supera a la ficción, pero como su mayor fuente de inspiración, Oshi no Ko cuenta con muchos de esos elementos oscuros y dramáticos en su historia. Pero aún así cuando llega a mostrarnos ciertos casos de abusos y demás cosas delicadas, el anime no consigue darnos nada más allá de lo interpretativo.

I understand that, since this is a show aimed at a fairly general audience—not to mention how famous it has become since the premiere of its first season—it’s normal that we don’t see specific cases of abuse or somewhat illegal relationships in this world of show business. Even so, Oshi no Ko doesn’t shy away from addressing issues like harassment, grooming, hypersexualization, and physical, verbal, and psychological abuse among the various stars we meet over its three seasons. But that’s not all—the show also features a decent amount of mysteries and drama-filled moments that will thrill anyone.
We should also mention that supernatural element that we barely got to see in the previous two seasons. Here in the third season, we see how these supernatural elements take on a certain prominence—something we had expected to see much earlier, right at the end of the series. In and of itself, the fact that the twin protagonists are actually the reincarnations of a doctor and a patient who died shortly before their birth is something that really grabs your attention at the start. Speaking of which, we also see some development in the somewhat controversial (not to say borderline “cancelable”) relationship between Aqua and Ruby.
Entiendo que al ser una obra dirigida para un público un tanto general, sin mencionar lo famosa que se ha vuelto desde la emisión de su primera temporada, es normal que no veamos casos específicos de abusos o relaciones un tanto ilegales en este mundo del espectáculo. Pero aún así, Oshi no Ko no descarta temas como el acoso, el grooming, la hipersexualización y el maltrato físico, verbal y psicológico en diferentes estrellas que conocemos en sus tres temporadas. Pero no solo tenemos esto, sumado con una decente cantidad de misterios y momentos repletos de drama que emocionan a cualquiera.
También hay que mencionar ese aditivo sobrenatural que apenas y llegamos a ver en las dos temporadas anteriores. Aquí en su tercera temporada vemos cómo dichos elementos sobrenaturales ocupan cierto protagonismo que uno esperaba ver antes justamente al final de la serie. Ya de por sí, el caso de que los gemelos protagonistas sean en realidad las reencarnaciones de un doctor y una paciente que murieron poco antes de su nacimiento es algo que llama mucho la atención al principio. En cuanto a esto, por cierto, vemos también cierto desarrollo entre la relación un tanto polémica (para no decir que rozaba con lo cancelable) que tienen Aqua y Ruby.

I’ll admit that several of the plot twists in this third season really shocked and moved me more than I expected. The way the story builds to its climax in the second half is fascinating because of the series of events that unfold there. We can criticize certain details and decisions made by some of the characters, but none of this detracts from the value or impact of the show as a whole. This is an anime that doesn’t aim to entertain you with a run-of-the-mill plot, but rather tells us about unusual cases in a completely dark and competitive world.
While in the end it’s still a mix of fiction with elements of drama, mystery, comedy, and the supernatural, Oshi no Ko is a work that illustrates—in a somewhat aesthetic and superficial way—the dark and discouraging reality of life in the entertainment industry. We see how fame, talent, and power can corrupt even the purest soul. We also see how the entertainment business ends up being a minefield where any bad decision will not only negatively affect your public image but can even lead you down a path of torture and suffering that may ultimately result in death.
Admito que varios de los giros de trama que tiene esta tercera temporada me llegaron a impactar y emocionar más de lo que esperaba. La forma en la que la historia llega a elevarse hasta su punto máximo en su segunda mitad es fascinante debido a la serie de acontecimientos que ocurren aquí. Podemos criticar ciertos detalles y decisiones que toman algunos de los personajes, pero nada de esto le quita valor e impacto a la obra como tal. Es un anime que no busca entretenerte con una trama común y corriente, sino que nos relata casos poco comunes en un mundo completamente oscuro y competitivo.
Si bien al final no deja de ser una mezcla de ficción con algo de drama, misterio, comedia y elementos sobrenaturales; Oshi no Ko es una obra que ilustra de manera un tanto estética y superficial la oscura y desalentadora realidad que se vive en el mundo del espectáculo. Vemos cómo la fama, el talento y el poder llega a corromper hasta al alma más pura. También vemos cómo el negocio del entretenimiento termina siendo un campo minado donde cualquier mala decisión no solo afectará negativamente tu imagen pública, sino que hasta te lleva a un sendero de tortura y sufrimiento que te puede causar hasta la muerte.

While I couldn’t care less about the whole idol scene and all that, what appeals to me most about this anime is the raw, dark way it portrays this world without any censorship. Its characters, while certainly appealing, develop to the point of becoming a highly ironic reflection of the evil and lack of empathy that exist in this world. We might come to identify with some of them, just as we might come to hate others. But to say that there’s a “good” character among so many here is very hard to determine.
By the way, one character who stands out a bit—aside from the twins—is Akane, because of her unique way of thinking and her ability to unravel certain mysteries surrounding Ai Hoshino’s death. Oh, and speaking of Ai, something that strikes me about this character is how the series itself idolizes her to such an extent that it becomes somewhat unhealthy for some of the main characters. However, this doesn’t take away from the fact that we also see a somewhat dark side of Ai as we gradually uncover the secrets surrounding her romantic relationships and her strange and unforgettable death.
Si bien me da igual todo este mundillo de los idols y demás, lo que más me atrae de este anime es la forma tan cruda y oscura de pintarnos este mundo sin ninguna censura. Sus personajes, si bien tienen su atractivo, llegan a desarrollarse hasta tal punto de volverse un reflejo muy irónico de lo que es la maldad y la poca empatía que posee este mundo. Puede que lleguemos a familiarizarnos con algunos, así como también podemos llegar a odiar a otros. Pero decir que tenemos a un buen personaje entre tantos casos aquí es algo muy difícil de decidir.
Por cierto, un personaje que llama un poco la atención, aparte de los gemelos, es Akane por su particular forma de pensar y descifrar ciertos misterios que hay entre la muerte de Ai Hoshino. Ah, y hablando de Ai, algo que me llama la atención de este personaje es cómo la misma serie llega a idolatrarla tanto que haya se vuelve algo enfermizo para algunos personajes principales. Sin embargo, esto no quita que también veamos un lado un tanto oscuro de Ai al descubrir poco a poco los secretos que hay entre sus relaciones amorosas y su extraña e inolvidable muerte.

Last but not least, let’s talk about what’s most remarkable and commendable about Oshi no Ko. For some reason, Doga Kobo made this adaptation its “magnum opus,” delivering an audiovisual production that borders on excellence. Its animation style, artwork, and visual effects are absolutely mind-blowing. The distinctive character designs, the way the various settings and landscapes are drawn, and the impressive fluidity of this anime are among the best. The studio’s commitment to this anime is so strong that it’s evident in every episode and season.
In the case of this third season, the animation reaches its peak with scenes and moments so well-crafted and produced that they’re almost enviable. The level of quality and detail is fascinating, and I really love how they manage to highlight the characters’ various expressions and emotions in such a visual and distinctive way. Take, for example, the sparkle in the twins’ eyes. The use of light, shadow, and a varied color palette—ranging from vibrant to dark—is also fascinating. The sound effects aren’t bad either. But what stands out most is its unparalleled soundtrack.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in the drama, mystery, idol, and supernatural genres.

Por alguna razón, Doga Kobo hizo de esta adaptación su “obra magna” al darnos una producción audiovisual que roza con lo excelente. El nivel de calidad y detalles que tiene es fascinante y me gusta mucho cómo logran destacar las distintas expresiones y emociones que poseen los personajes de una forma tan visual y distintiva. Por ejemplo, tenemos el caso del brillo de los ojos de los gemelos, por ejemplo. También el uso de luces, sombras, paleta de colores variados entre vibrantes y oscuros es fascinante. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal. Pero más resalta es su banda sonora sin igual.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de drama, misterio, idol y sobrenatural.
