I particularly love movies of all genres; however, I’m most drawn to horror, suspense, mystery, action, and thrillers that combine psychological elements, action, and suspense. Now, setting horror aside, all of the other elements come together in the crime thriller The Rip a movie that, in my opinion, keeps you glued to the screen from the very first moment. The film was written, directed, and produced by Joe Carnahan himself—a filmmaker who doesn’t like to keep things simple and brings us stories that feel incredibly real. It’s impressive how a movie that takes place mostly inside a single room or house can generate so much intrigue and excitement within such a confined space.
Similarly, the director creates an atmosphere that is at once somber, fantastical, and realistic, so that the viewer can feel the distinct heat of Miami and feel as if they’re right there in that room. The close-ups are brilliant and well-executed; the scenes are acted naturally, keeping us guessing about what might happen next and who’s who. And of course, the film features the acting duo of Matt Damon (Dane Dumars) and Ben Affleck (J.D. Byrne)—a pair we’ve come to expect great performances from. Without a doubt, the entire plot leaves your head spinning, making you wonder how much loyalty and trust are worth when temptation knocks on your door and you decide to put a price on yourself. You might think the film is all about action; however, although there aren’t frequent gunshots, the moments when gunfire does occur are precisely those moments that truly call for it. What is certain, though, is that there’s a lot of psychological tension, a great deal of mistrust, and we see how police morale—which aims to be extremely strong—completely crumbles in those situations. The atmosphere is suffocating, somber, and richly detailed, with scenes crafted with a unique sense of realism.
As for the performances, the film features an incredible cast; the director has managed to bring together many familiar faces, who have given the film that touch of pure realism; each of them delivered a masterful performance. But the lead performances by Matt Damon (Dane Dumars) and Ben Affleck (J.D. Byrne) were also masterful. These two actors perform naturally; there’s nothing forced about their performances; their gestures, their glances, their fights—all their movements are extremely realistic.
I’m not going to tell you any more about this movie, because it would spoil your enjoyment of it. The truth is that the film shows us that money is no one’s friend; the ambition to have it all is stronger than loyalty, morality, and even life itself. In the end, you want it all, but you might be in for a surprise and end up with nothing. El ambiente es asfixiante, sombrío, bien detallado, escenas bien creadas con un realismo único.
En cuanto a las actuaciones, el filme cuenta con una gama de actores increíbles; el director ha logrado reunir a muchas caras conocidas, que le han dado a la película ese toque de realismo neto; cada uno de ellos hizo su trabajo de manera magistral. Pero magistral también fueron las participaciones principales llevadas a cabo por Matt Damon (Dane Dumars) y Ben Affleck (J.D. Byrne). Estas dos personas actúan de manera natural, no se nota nada que sea mecanizado; los gestos, las miradas, las peleas, todos sus movimientos son sumamente reales.
No les voy a decir más sobre este filme, porque les arruinaría las ganas de verlo.
