Is there actually any yardstick by which to measure the qualities of a man or a woman to determine whether or not they are what they seem? 🤔 Well, depending on how you look at it, yes; a real man is one who provides security, respect and love to his partner in the same way he would to himself, but not everyone is up to the task.
I can’t deny that the most appealing thing about this film was its title, and that’s what made me choose it. I wanted to know what a ‘real man’ is and whether I’ve been wrong all my life; to my satisfaction, it’s exactly what I’d thought and believed since I was a child. That man does exist – I just haven’t met him yet – and watching this film gave me a little hope, and it’s not what you’re thinking; it’s not a sappy love story or a K-drama. 😁
Review
A Real Man stars an elderly man – a man in his 60s or 70s (Carlos Olalla) – who is married to (Rosario Pardo), another elderly lady. They form a conventional marriage where the wife does everything around the house, from grocery shopping and cooking to cleaning, whilst her husband is the breadwinner.
The problem here is the very thing that nowadays destroys marriages in their early years; it’s just that the wife prefers to bear the burden in silence. Eventually, a tragic event occurs, putting Guillermo to the test as he has to reinvent himself to carry on.

Dejando solo a Guillermo.
Characters
Ángela: She is a woman devoted to her home; from dawn until she goes to bed, she is busy looking after her husband, cooking what he likes, tidying up after him, cleaning up his mess, washing and ironing his clothes as if she were running a laundry service – in short, looking after him as if he were a baby.
Whilst she feels exhausted, she is reassured that her husband wants for nothing. She is physically and emotionally drained; she knows she is not valued and this depresses her. She feels lonely; even though she sleeps with someone by her side, she feels the emptiness that only loneliness can bring.
She admires her husband and would like him to see her in the same light, although that will never happen. She takes comfort in the hope that the relationship between father and daughter will be resolved; that is why she does not speak to her daughter and confides her true feelings to her.
Guillermo: His life revolves around the comfort of having his meals served hot, playing with his friends and believing himself to be the centre of the world. To him, a woman is a necessary accessory that every man must have.
He is a retired doctor who hasn’t seen his only daughter for years; as far as he’s concerned, she’s dead, and his pride won’t even allow him to miss her.
Nuria: She is a young woman who wants to visit her parents, but her mum won’t let her. She works and is financially independent, but not emotionally.
She has toxic relationships with men, which is why she has not yet settled down. She misses her dad and would like to mend their relationship.
The neighbour:
She cares for Ángela, so she does everything she can to help Guillermo; she visits him and offers advice on household matters.
Setting:
Everything takes place in the flat where they live; this space transforms as the story unfolds, changing from a cosy, clean and attractive place into a messy rubbish dump.
The supermarket also often features in the film’s setting, revealing another side to Guillermo's personality outside the home.
Plot
The dynamics of the marriage are normal for a couple who have been together for so many years, but there is a complete lack of intimacy – and I’m not referring to the sexual aspect. This couple merely co-existed; they didn’t have deep, sincere conversations. The wife didn’t express her feelings because she knew they wouldn’t be valued in the end, and the husband… well, he wasn’t even interested; he, for his part, lived in a perfect world.
There was one scene that really tugged at my heartstrings: the husband’s hobby was painting, and he never showed his work until it was finished. The wife had always dreamt of one day being the muse for his paintings, and every time he showed her a finished piece, she would feel sad. 😔😪.
Guillermo was never a real man to his wife—neither as a sexual partner, nor at home, nor as a father—but he certainly believed himself to be a real man.
To get to the crux of the story and its ending, it’s unavoidable to mention this part of the film; it contains a major spoiler. If you haven’t seen it, I recommend skipping this section and going straight to the final message and reflection.
Spoiler warning
Ángela could no longer bear the weight of her suffering and one day she was no longer there; she passed away, leaving Guillermo alone.
For Guillermo, his wife’s death was more a source of anger at her leaving him alone than anything else, but when he felt hungry, ran out of clean clothes and the rubbish began to pile up, he started to appreciate his late wife; only then did he realise all her efforts and the impact of her absence. His grief brought a touch of remorse, though that didn’t last long either, as in the end we know that nobody is indispensable.
He had to learn to look after himself, mend his relationship with his daughter, and began a romance that confirmed he wasn’t the extraordinary lover he thought he was.
Final message or reflection
This film isn’t for everyone; young people might find it boring and feel it’s a bit slow-paced, but in its defence, it has some surprising twists, a touch of humour and plenty of real-life moments.
Ultimately, it suggests that it’s not worth living with someone who makes you feel lonely and worthless.
A real man is one who doesn’t hide his wife; on the contrary, he admires her and is proud of his partner, who has healthy relationships with his children, who exudes sensitivity, tenderness and love for everything around him, and if, on top of all that, he’s also good in bed, then he’s the jackpot. 😆😁
