With an increase in the world population, scientists are on the lookout for sustainable sources of food. One such source is consuming insects such as crickets, locusts, and mealworms.
Insects are rich in protein, but require less land, water, and food compared to conventional livestock and may serve as a feasible alternative to meat production. One of the insects that researchers study as a food alternative is mealworms. Mealworms can be included as parts of protein bars, flour, and meat replacements. Proponents argue that insect farming is an answer to ecological issues related to food production, as insects emit less greenhouse gases than livestock such as cattle.
Wu et al. (2026) recently conducted research involving the use of nutritional life cycle assessment to investigate mealworms as a sustainable source of protein. Based on their findings, mealworms can be a nutritious source of protein that may contribute to less negative environmental impact than many conventional protein-rich foods from animals. Nevertheless, the authors also stated that the farming methods, energy use, and production systems are very important in determining the sustainability of insect farming.
In Wales, primary school children participated in a study that involved them tasting foods with protein represented by insects. The study looked into the attitude of children towards alternative proteins, and was carried out by Cardiff University and the University of the West of England and found that children are receptive to eating them.
Although consuming insects is not common in Western cultures, more than two billion people regularly use insects in their diets, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Nevertheless, many people remain sceptical about eating insects due to cultural issues, safety issues, concerns about allergies, etc.
Research shows that education and testing of insect-based products may help to change people's attitude towards insect consumption. While it is unlikely that insects would replace food sources completely, mealworms and other insects may play a role in the future sustainable food system.
