Decided today to harvest my potatoes. The weather is getting colder, and there’s more chance of them rotting in the wet soil.
So I have two bags here. As you can see, the leaves are starting to turn yellow, which apparently is a sign that the potatoes are ready to harvest.
So I tipped the bags over.
And you can already see the potatoes peeping out of the soil.
Then I pulled up the stems, and the potatoes all came rolling out!
The colour is amazingly vibrant when they’re freshly pulled from the soil. Although they weren’t as big as I thought they would be, that’s probably because I planted them later than I should have.
I collected the potatoes and then dug through the soil to find the ones left behind.
Not as big a harvest as I expected, but I’m really pleased with them.
I saved the bigger ones and placed them, unwashed, in a basket lined with paper to help prevent them from rotting.
The rest? I planned to roast them.
We eat potatoes all the time, and because they’re such an everyday, easy food, we often think we can just throw them in the oven or boil them and that’s it.
But there’s actually a bit of technique to making even the simplest food taste much better.
So I washed the potatoes nicely.
Oh! I am getting obsessed with my potatoes. I love the colour!
Then boiled them for 8 minutes in salted water with a little bicarbonate of soda.
Then I gave them a good shake to rough up the outside and loosen the skin a little.
I added beef dripping, then into the oven they went for 40 to 45 minutes at 200°C.
About 15 minutes before they were finished, I added garlic and a few sprigs of rosemary.
And honestly… these potatoes were SO good. 🤤
They’re the creamiest, most delicious potatoes I’ve ever tasted in my life.
I’m not really a potato person, but after harvesting and cooking them this way, I think I can definitely learn to love them. 😂
And now I’m already looking forward to planting more next year!
Have a lovely day,
Mariah 🌱
