Strung (2026) is such a psychological movie/ thriller, a movie directed by Malcolm D. Lee and produced by Tyler Perry and Jason Blum. Featuring the popular movie star, Chloe Bailey, as Laila, who was a very talented and gifted violinist, facing life struggles and when it seemed she had found a lucrative and life changing opportunity as a private tutor to a wealthy, influential and very mysterious family, her life took a turn, embracing such opportunity led to manipulation, secrets and a psychological battle.
The greatest strength of this movie is Chloe Bailey's violin performance, and that was what made me interested in this movie, because her performance was incredible. Chloe, while battling with so much fear, uncertainty and, tries to revive her career. At every scene, her emotional expression made me sympathize with her. She embodied her emotions in this movie, especially the part where she began to feel trapped in an unsettled environment, around strange/ weird people. Lynn Whitfield, Coco Jones, Anna Diop, and Lucien Laviscount added to the depth of this movie.
Also, the atmosphere of this movie is a major highlight. The luxurious mansion added much beauty and luxury to the movie. The lighting was superb, a dim lightening and eerie silence that built suspense and curiosity. This also works with the musical score and created a mood that made me curious from the beginning of this movie. It wasn't just background entertainment, but the use of violin that blended perfectly with the suspense. In this story, music is treated as an important part of the story telling in every scene, not just a background entertainment.
Regardless of how interesting the movie Strung might be, the first half of this movie was full of suspense. I was left curious to know each actors motive and intention, but it goes twisted in the second half. The revelation of the motive came quicker than expected, it felt underdeveloped, and some scenes came without convincing explanation. The second hall weakened the impact of a movie that would have been a gripping psychological thriller.
The storyline of Strung was a good one regardless, it felt like a psychological thriller, but some scenes were unintentionally exaggerated and seems like a melodrama . I appreciated and enjoyed strung because of the suspense at the first scenes, the unpredictable plot and unexpected twist. I would rate Strung (2026) a 70/100.
Despite the flaws of this movie, I found it really engaging to watch, the plot made it difficult to choose who to trust. I assumed the villain was the child actress Romy Woods, who played the role of Zuri, who was fond of a mask, was the villain, but it turned out she was just a victim and prey like Laila.
