If you are looking for a high-octane Korean series that mixes brutal action,heartfelt friendship and a sharp look at real-world desperation, Bloodhounds Season 1 delivers in a big way. Released on Netflix on June 9, 2023, this eight-episode action-crime thriller is based on Jeong Chan’s Naver webtoon. It clocks in as a complete, bingeable story with no filler. A second season later arrived this 2026, but I am focusing this report and reiew solely on the 2023 first season,that has eight episodes.
Set against the harsh backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea, the show zeroes in on everyday people crushed by debt and the ruthless loan sharks who exploit them. It is cinematic, visceral, and emotional—perfect for viewers who love underdog stories with jaw-dropping fight choreography and genuine heart.
Premise: A Mother’s Struggle and a Son’s Fight.
Kim Gun-woo (Woo Do-hwan) is a promising young boxer and former Marine living with his single mother, who runs a small cafe.The pandemic has gutted local businesses.Customers stay home, revenue dries up and survival becomes a daily battle. Gun-woo channels everything into boxing.
He competes in a rookie tournament (held without spectators due to restrictions) and wins prize money specifically to help his mother keep the cafe afloat and chip away at existing loans.
His mother, desperate and trusting, falls for a seemingly better deal from Smile Capital(The loan Shark Company),a shady private lending outfit.The salesman pitches a lower interest rate than the bank. She signs.Hidden in the fine print is a crushing 24-hour extension fee clause. When she cannot pay, Smile Capital’s enforcers storm the cafe, smash the place up and terrorize her. Gun-woo arrives, fights hard using his boxing skills, and takes down several thugs—until the organization’s massive enforcer, Kang In-beom, overpowers him. Gun-woo is beaten bloody in front of his mother.
The main villain: Kim Myeong-gil (Park Sung-woong), the scar-faced CEO of Smile Capital.
He is impressed by Gun-woo’s grit and offers him a way out—join the organization as one of their “bloodhounds” (debt collectors who use violence). Gun-woo refuses in the strongest terms possible, spitting in Myeong-gil’s face. In retaliation, Myeong-gil carves a matching scar into Gun-woo’s cheek.
The message is clear: defy them and suffer. This is the spark that ignites the entire season. From this moment, Gun-woo’s life becomes a nonstop fight for survival, justice, and the people he loves.
The Friend Who Changes Everything: Hong Woo-jin. Right before the cafe attack, Gun-woo forms a pivotal friendship. In the rookie tournament final, he faces Hong Woo-jin (Lee Sang-yi), another former Marine and talented but more impulsive boxer. Gun-woo wins with his signature one-punch power, but instead of gloating, he invites Woo-jin for a meal. What starts as post-fight awkwardness quickly turns into genuine camaraderie. Woo-jin is loud, loyal, street-smart, and carries his own baggage—including past connections to the rough side of debt collection. When Gun-woo’s world collapses, Woo-jin steps up without hesitation.He uses his old contacts to point Gun-woo toward help rather than surrender. Their bond is the emotional core of the series.
They train together, fight side by side, crack jokes under pressure, and refuse to abandon each other even when the body count rises and the odds look impossible.

The Good Guys Who Come to Their Aid
Desperate and outmatched, the pair find an unlikely ally in Choi Tae-ho (Huh Joon-ho), often called President Choi or Mr. Choi.
He is a former legendary loan shark who walked away from the predatory side of the business.Now wheelchair-bound, he runs a quiet operation giving zero-interest loans to people in genuine medical or desperate need.He has a soft spot for the vulnerable and has even founded an orphanage.
His adoptive granddaughter,Hyeon-ju (Kim Sae-ron), is already investigating Smile Capital’s scams independently.
Choi hires Gun-woo and Woo-jin as bodyguards for Hyeon-ju after seeing their skills and character. He advances them money so Gun-woo can settle his mother’s immediate crisis.
The arrangement quickly becomes deeper. Choi’s team—loyal, capable men including Lee Du-yeong and Hwang Yang-jung—joins the effort.

Hyeon-ju brings her own investigative fire. Together they form a found family determined to dismantle Smile Capital. Choi and Myeong-gil share a bloody history. Myeong-gil once worked under Choi. When Choi tried to shut down the old operation cleanly, Myeong-gil and In-beom robbed him, stabbed him, and threw him from a building, leaving him paralyzed. Myeong-gil built Smile Capital on that stolen money and the same ruthless methods. Personal revenge and moral justice collide.
Escalation: Scams, Traps, and Rising Stakes. Smile Capital’s methods go far beyond one cafe. They run sophisticated scams using stolen identities of homeless people to create shell companies and borrow from other lenders,then vanish with the cash. They blackmail the wealthy with secret recordings (including compromising videos of powerful figures) stored on a protected hard drive. Myeong-gil uses dirt, violence, and connections—including moles in the police—to stay untouchable.
A high-stakes plan unfolds: Myeong-gil was lured into a contract signing so they can hack his phone and destroy the blackmail hard drive.The technical side works, but Myeong-gil has backups, a police mole, and pure malice. He poisons detectives, kidnaps Mr. Oh, and tries to wipe out the remaining opposition. Gun-woo and Woo-jin rescue their people through sheer grit and help from unexpected corners (including archery from an ally). In-beom, captured at one point, bites off his own tongue rather than talk. With the net tightening, Myeong-gil prepares to flee Korea by cargo ship to Vietnam, taking stolen gold bars with him. Through a paid tip from a former associate, Gun-woo and Woo-jin learn the ship details. They board, confront Myeong-gil and In-beom in a brutal final fight sequence, and defeat them. Interpol is alerted for the arrest. The gold is recovered. Gun-woo and Woo-jin refuse to keep the fortune for themselves; they insist it go toward a welfare foundation and hospital in the spirit of what Choi would have wanted. Min-beom agrees and presses a smaller share on the two boxers so they can rebuild their lives and return to boxing. The season closes on a note of hard-won peace. Gun-woo reunites with his mother. The two friends stand together, scarred but intact, having protected the people who matter and taken down a system that preyed on the desperate.
For the scrobble.life crowd: This is the kind of series you finish in a weekend, then immediately message friends about the fight scenes, the friendship, the “join us or suffer” villain energy, and the satisfying takedown. It is absolute cinematic thriller territory—visceral, emotional and highly rewatchable.If you loved the underdog fury of other Korean action stories or simply want a complete, high-stakes narrative with heart, Bloodhounds Season 1 is essential viewing. The bloodhounds hunted the hunters, and justice, though costly, landed.
