Some Personal Investment Mistakes

I tend to call these mistakes as tuition fees because that makes the experience easier take than admit fucking up despite exercising the best due diligence I could think of before it happened.

Investment I misunderstood.

The stock market. The trading guru's made it look easy doing the technical analysis and shit but there's a fundamental analysis to things that keep the stock moving the way things are. And this fundamental analysis thing isn't the same as crypto. I knew there needed a lot of studying but the more I became engrossed with the subject of trading, the more I learned there's more ways to make money that you can just get lost in the process. It's a humbling experience.

Investment I held too long.

Hive. I should've just sold earlier but this is in hindsight 20/20. Who knew it could get this but I think I already knew the signs were there but I ended up ignoring them. It doesn't mean I think my Hive holdings are nothing, it's more like I just ended up caring less and focused my efforts on other important things like not losing more money. If it rises, great. If it doesn't, oh well this is my tuition again. The second thing that comes to mind were some stocks I've kept for sentimental reasons despite dropping more than half their value just cause.

Mistaking price movement for fundamentals.

Crypto gave me this lesson and so did the stock market that followed. But I'm content with the idea that crypto isn't obeying fundamentals while stocks and commodities do have real world implications why they move.

Following narratives.

I wasn't the type that listened to trading gurus but it did took me a while to learn to sift through market news to supplement my fundamental analysis. I don't have the skills that could help me earn a lot of money because the focus was building skills that prevented me from losing money. So far, the latter skill set works.

I don't get to be on the moon ride or I often miss the train but the pain of making a wrong money call can't be erased easily by gains, especially when I should've known better. I forgot the psychological bias or principle this is but it's sort of experiencing more pain as significant than pleasure.

Thanks for your time.

"Tuition fees" — I love that reframe! It's the most expensive education available, but somehow the lessons actually stick 😄

The Hive one hurts in a very relatable way — hindsight really is 20/20, especially when the chart goes the wrong direction after you finally sell. And confusing price movement for fundamentals? That's basically crypto's introductory course, mandatory for everyone.

The fact that you can write about this calmly and with perspective means the tuition was well spent. Thanks for sharing the honest recap!
