Hate speech is something so rampant in our society nowadays, with people exhibiting the act with a carefree spirit, so much that it's now occuring in every daily activities both physical and online as if there is no impact after those speeches are made.
There's a saying by an OAP friend that there is freedom of speech but the freedom after speech is the one not guaranteed. That is, as a bonafide or even non-bonafide citizen, you have the right to speak and express yourself the way you deem fit but as long as it is not in anyway compatible with the recipient and against the normal manner of communication and approach, your free speech becomes questionable and only then does the freedom we have as a citizen to speak becomes unguaranteed.
It's normal to criticize things openly but not when it's glaring as a form of hatred toward another fellow being and in as much as this may be done physically along ourselves, talking down on people, body shaming or simply breaking them apart with just words, this act is still mostly done on the social media space.
With the way everyone comes in and goes out on the social media platforms, people actually feel like it's a normal thing to talk but until the consequences pops out and they keep begging for mercy to reduce or waiv their punishment, they never know the gravity of what their utterances may cause.
It made me remember the incident about a hip-hop artist whose child was dragged on the internet and surely verily, the person was dealt with and sentenced to prison. He said he could afford been dragged in the mud because he choose that lifestyle the moment he choose to be a public figure but doing it to his child is the height he will ever condone. This simply means that it's a different thing to be free to talk but when nonchalant speech comes into the freeness, it definitely becomes a criminal offense and there is always a law binding it to profer punishment to the offender.
Sometimes it may even be to correct people just like a lady who was referring to a man old enough to be her father by his first name due to the Whites' idea of interaction but we're in africa so people felt odd with it especially when she got corrected by the man himself. Some corrected her in love while some went for her big time in a hard way with bad approach and words.
Even when the speech made does not cause harm to people it was made to but as long as it is something not palatable to hearing then I don't think it should be condoned because it is from this level of exhibition that ends up leading to the level of hate speech.
The most surprising thing about this whole hate speech is that, most people who does this thing purposely do it to chase clouts, attract audience and gain followers for more engagements. All these at the expense of someone's peace of mind and mental health and we don't even seem to bother about the consequences and impact of our utterances.
