The Start of the Venezuelan Superior Basketball League Ignites Passion and Builds the Future of the National Team (English/Spanish)

Basketball in Venezuela was crying out for a platform like this. Those of us who follow the sport closely know the reality of recent seasons in the SPB: exciting games, yes, but with an overabundance of imported players who end up taking up most of the minutes on the court. The result? Promising local talent watching the game from the bench, stalling a development that can only be achieved in the heat of real competition.

That’s why the launch of this Superior Basketball League (LSB) has been a true breath of fresh air and one of the best decisions for our sport. Having a 100% Venezuelan league isn’t just an organizational success; it’s the only real way to ensure the generational renewal of the “Vinotinto de las Alturas.”

Heart-stopping games and real leadership

If there’s one thing that has excited me about the first games of this LSB, it’s the parity and intensity with which the teams are playing. No one gives anything away here. Seeing young Venezuelan players take on the responsibility of closing out games, calling for the ball in high-pressure moments, and leading the offense completely changes the dynamic of the game.

We saw a clear example of this level of play in the clash between Trotamundos de Carabobo and Hidrocarburos. It was a thrilling, adrenaline-fueled game that came down to overtime. In that high-stakes scenario, the hero of the day for the Expreso Azul was Reyes, a young point guard with experience in the national team’s youth categories. Seeing a young talent take the reins, execute with composure, and decide a game of that magnitude is living proof of what happens when you place your trust in the youth system. In the SPB, a play of that caliber would likely have been left to an imported player; here, a local player took it on—and delivered.

Quality Minutes to Develop Giants

Another example that demonstrates the direct impact of this initiative is Enrique Medina. We’re talking about a 2.18-meter-tall player—a physical and technical gem who needs consistent playing time to fully refine his game.

Height can’t be taught, but the craft inside the paint is learned through playing. Seeing Medina make a decisive impact on his team—not just because of his size, but because he’s getting quality minutes—is excellent news for Venezuelan basketball. Centers of that stature need time on the court to refine their mobility, physicality, and defensive awareness. The LSB is giving him the opportunity to be a key player rather than just an occasional rotation piece.

A Direct Boost to the National Team

At the end of the day, the biggest beneficiaries of this tournament will be all the Vinotinto fans. These young players who are currently deciding close games, logging 25 or 30 minutes per night, and taking on leadership roles are the same ones who will wear the national jersey in international tournaments tomorrow.

The Superior Basketball League is proving that Venezuela has no shortage of talent and a desire to compete. It’s immensely satisfying to see our players dominate on the court and to know that the future of Venezuelan basketball is being built, minute by minute, with pure Venezuelan talent.
