The other day, I went with my daughter to a workshop “Skate of Art,” which she had wanted to join for quite a while. It was a “Let’s paint a skateboard!” workshop organized by a skateboard community in Chemnitz, a city in the same state where we live.
Some of the people there I know through makerspaces in the Chemnitz region are also part of the skateboard community. I had seen videos of them smoothly skating through the city and always thought they looked so cool. As for me, I was happy just watching. At my age, the idea of falling and breaking a bone is a little scary... Or so I thought.
Inspired by maker girls, my daughter pulled out a skateboard she got from a friend of my partner's some time ago and started putting a foot into the world of skateboarding. And I accompanied her to the workshop.
First we sprayed white over the original paint, then painted the skateboard based on my daughter’s design. We still need to draw the face of the starfish, but it is almost finished 🙌
I also got some instructions on how to use spray paint and tried it for the first time in my life. And wow, this is fun! Now I kind of want to master it.
Everyone there was also very kind, and I found myself thinking, “Ah, it would have been fun if I could skateboard too. Maybe I should have started when I was a child living in California.” But... maybe I can still start now? Perhaps one day I will actually stand on a skateboard myself 😄
So, my daughter has introduced me to a new world and given me new inspiration. I sometimes wonder whether I am raising my daughter, or whether she is also raising me. Either way, I’m enjoying discovering these new worlds together.
