Because the infamous algorithm is everywhere, watching pretty much everything I do, it also knows that I am aspiring to create art and sell it as a sideline business.
Consequently, I am presented with a vast array of advertising for all manners of services related to having a "micro business" or related to being an artist and what have you.
Honestly, most of these feel like they are directed at someone who might be lucky on the days when a single brain cell is operational inside their heads. Just how stupid do you think I am?
Wait... don't answer that!
From where I'm sitting, most of it looks like an endless attempt at trying to take money from people who barely have any to begin with since most artists are — old myths notwithstanding — operating pretty much at the level of starvation.
Lately, the trend seems to be really upticking in the area of insurance. Highly specialized insurance.
Most of it just feels like it's more and more fear mongering, promising to insure artists against selling events being canceled that they are scheduled to be in and your paints drying up or bad weather or whatever else that typically occurs as part of simply doing the work.
But somehow ,somebody, somewhere — probably some Ivy League MBA wearing an Armani suit — has determined that this is yet another place where we can extract $30.00 a month for an insurance policy that likely excludes pretty much everything you actually need and includes things that they can persuade you to be afraid of... even though they have never occurred in your life.
Yes, I'm a little bit cynical; perhaps the result of being part of a creative field in which everything is usually greatly exaggerated in the positive, for fear that nobody would actually be involved if the world knew the truth about how difficult it is to get from point A to point B.
Even if I did determine that I wanted "art insurance," it would be much cheaper to just add a provision/rider to our existing homeowner's policy than to sign up for one of these sketchy offers.
I just struggle with the whole concept of living in the world where so many have resorted to selling useless things, rather than something people actually need and can use.
