A few months ago, the subway was undergoing maintenance (the very line that runs by my house). Even though I don’t go out much and I don’t take the subway very often, whenever I do, it’s as if time had never passed—everything is still the same, nothing has changed… It’s like a backroom, haha.
The subway around here is finally back up and running. They were supposedly working on improvements these past few months, but I think the only changes in the last couple of years have been the addition of more modern ticket machines and subway cards, as well as screens where you can top up your balance yourself—but other than that… everything else is still the same: slow service, dirty trains, and no air conditioning.
Every time it stopped at a station and the doors opened, it was a relief for us because fresh air came in, and we no longer had to breathe that suffocating, foul-smelling air with the little oxygen left when the doors close. Sometimes I remember that at some point in my life I had the chance to buy a car and didn’t, and I regret it so much. Taking public transportation really is a nightmare, especially when it rains, just like it did that day.
The trains are exactly the same as when I was a teenager; when I say it’s stuck in time, I’m not exaggerating—seriously, it’s always looked like this: sad, dark, melancholic, chaotic. During rush hour, it’s horrible—utter chaos, with people pushing each other and not letting you get out. I have terrible memories of the subway, and seeing that it’s still the same after so many years makes me pretty sad. In this country, it’s hard to see anything moving forward.
