Sources of Light

Humans have always tried to claim at least a small patch of space from the darkness.

For thousands of years, we made fires, lit candles, crafted lamps, and eventually learned to harness electricity. Our sources of light became more complex, reliable, and convenient. The campfire gave way to the candle, the candle to the kerosene lamp, and the lamp to the light bulb.

It seemed that we had finally defeated the darkness.

But one day, the power will go out. It doesn't matter why — a global catastrophe or a machine uprising. The cities will go dark, millions of screens will become nothing more than pieces of glass, but somewhere in a drawer, it will still be there. A small, completely unremarkable candle.

And perhaps it will turn out to be humanity's greatest source of hope. After thousands of years of technological progress, we will once again have to light our world with wax, a wick, and fire.

Some inventions are simply too good to be replaced.
