My Inner Critic and What I’m Learning About Rest

This week, I came across these questions, and I found them quite interesting because, even though they seem simple, they made me think a lot about my relationship with myself.

Do I have an internal critic?

Yes, definitely.

I think we all have that inner voice that shows up from time to time to question what we’re doing, what we’re not doing, and even the way we’re living our days.

In my case, my inner critic has a very repetitive phrase:

“You should be doing something.”

It’s funny because it doesn’t necessarily show up when I’m doing something wrong. Many times, it appears precisely when I’m resting.

I can be quietly reading and think, “You could be using this time to do something else.”

I can be watching a movie and think, “You have things you need to get done.”

Even when I go for a bike ride, take a walk, or simply sit in the sun, sometimes I get this feeling that I should be doing something “more productive.”

And I think that’s exactly where the problem lies.

For a long time, I associated doing things with making progress.

If I was working, studying, organizing, creating content, exercising, or getting things done, I felt like I was making good use of my day.

But if I was simply resting, I could get this feeling that I was wasting time.

When does it speak the loudest?

I think it speaks the loudest when I feel like I didn’t accomplish enough during the day.

It’s as if I have an imaginary list of things I should have achieved, and even when I’ve done many of them, my attention immediately goes to whatever is still unfinished.

And that’s when another one of its favorite phrases appears:

“You could still do more.”

It’s like having a little manager inside my head who is never completely satisfied.

And if my inner critic were a person, I imagine her as a very organized, punctual, demanding woman with a schedule full of things to do.

She would probably have a notebook in her hand, constantly checking the time, and even have a to-do list for her moments of rest.

She would be the kind of person who sits down to relax and, five minutes later, says:

“Okay, we’ve rested enough. What’s next?”

And the funny thing is that, even though imagining her this way makes me laugh a little, I can also recognize how much of my life I’ve spent that way.

What does true rest look like for me?

I think I’m starting to discover it.

For me, true rest doesn’t necessarily mean sleeping or spending the whole day in bed.

Many times, rest means doing something I don’t have to do.

Going for a bike ride simply because I want to.

Sitting under a tree and reading.

Having a coffee slowly.

Walking without having to get anywhere quickly.

Spending time with my cats.

Listening to music.

Going outside to enjoy the sunshine.

Or even having an afternoon where I don’t produce anything at all.

And I think that last one is the hardest for me.

Because there’s still this feeling that I should be using my time more “efficiently.”

But I’m also beginning to understand that not every moment has to be productive.

Some moments simply need to be enjoyed.

How can I give myself more rest without feeling guilty?

I think I’m still learning this one.

One of the things I want to start doing is letting go of the idea that rest is a reward.

Because we often think:

“I’ll rest after I finish everything.”

The problem is that “everything” is never really finished.

There’s always another email, another task, another project, something else to organize, another piece of content to create, another book to read, another responsibility.

So if I wait until absolutely everything is done before resting, I’ll probably never truly rest.

I’m trying to change that idea and start seeing rest as a necessary part of my life, rather than something I have to earn.

I think that’s also why I’ve been enjoying those little outings I’ve shared lately.

Going for an early bike ride, exploring a park, sitting under a tree with a book, or simply going outside to enjoy some sunshine.

They’re very simple moments, but I feel like they remind me that my life can’t be made up entirely of responsibilities and things that need to get done.

I also need space to simply be.

And maybe that’s what I’m learning right now: resting doesn’t mean I’m wasting time.

Sometimes, resting is also a way of taking care of myself.

And even though my inner critic still shows up from time to time with her famous phrase, “You should be doing something,” I’m trying to answer her:

“Yes, there are many things I could be doing… but right now, I want to be here.”

And I think that, too, is learning to live a little more slowly.

That internal critic can be ironic, showing up just when you want to have a little break. It's truly amusing to imagine it acting like a manager demanding you do more.😁 I'm glad that you are not letting it keep you from enjoying your rest and the things you love.❤️ !LADY
