Shooting in vertical

I shoot in vertical now. See.

This is a side of stage shot, from an Opeth live show at the start of August 2026. It was a local show to me so I said I’d come along and grab some shots for the socials

So I shot vertical. Social video means vertical video. Which doesn’t come naturally on a fairly chunky, quite heavy but compact, camera like mine.

This was the venue.

My pals Paradise Lost were main support and it was SUCH a joy to hear them live. (I filmed them too ofcourse)

Anyway. I think there’s still loads of value in shooting landscape and cropping your vertical image from that, where needed - it means you can reframe. Plus shooting oldschool landscape means you can do a proper YouTube release of an edit, like this I cut for them:

But there’s something more immediate to just rotating 90 degrees - and BANG - that’s your shot. No going back.

When I shoot landscape now - like another different show I filmed the weekend just gone - I see a lot of younger videographers look at me with (probably) pity 😭😂 But fuck that. Do what YOU do 🔥

Ah, young people and their vertical video. We see in landscape, but I can just about forgive it if the video is just showing one person.

That looks like a great gig and it's cool you were by the stage. Hope all is good with you. I know you play some drums and I was just at the UK Drum Show in Liverpool. Of course I did a post about it.

    Rock on!

  • The vertical video syndrome...

Reminds me of my days as a film teacher, over a decade ago...

    Abbracci from Italia!
