She is everywhere, in many forms; they are all one and stem from the same terrifying spell that petrifies the innocent.

Charismatic and charming, even with that macabre smile, she features in decorations and games, appearing alongside witches and ghosts, every traditional character. She’s found in goody bags and party supplies designed to create a fantastic party where children can enjoy ‘trick or treat’.
She features on bunting, toys, cake decorations, gift wrapping, table decorations for dinner, glasses, cups, plates and everything a child could wish for. She’s in every shop showcasing the products on sale, enveloping them in a pleasant yet eerie atmosphere. Entire shops are dedicated to her; she even appears in giant form to welcome customers.
It is her that children love, and if they have the chance to carve one from a pumpkin from the vegetable patch, so much the better. The whole family helps out and they create a handmade pumpkin with a macabre and terrifying touch to its smile, into which they then place a lit candle.
There are small ones and enormous ones, made from various materials and featuring different designs, but they are all one and the same, all serving the same predetermined purpose. They were created by the witches who once inhabited a forgotten village, shrouded in mist and the eerie sounds of dark nights. With their words of vengeance against those who had ruthlessly cast them out, they imbued the pumpkins with a mission, a mission that has been fulfilled for hundreds of years.
Every family wanted to have one, whatever its shape or material, but because they were all one and the same, each year they would choose where to fulfil their purpose: innocence, purity of soul, simplicity and humility. That was where evil was destined to go. That pure innocence must not exist or spread, lest the witches’ own wickedness be overshadowed.
No matter how much time passed, the spell could not be broken, but the sages of the planet knew how to block that evil.
The most vulnerable and sweet-natured children in the world, those whom the witches sought to silence, were protected by a cat, a black cat that bestows protection and salvation. They, too, were one, and knew how to communicate and seek out the children chosen for that day to outwit the witches and their fatal spell, which could turn the children into lifeless objects.
They watched over each chosen child throughout their childhood, caring for and safeguarding them until they were out of danger. But if the pumpkin arrived and they were unable to prevent it, at least they would be the sacrifice.
Julia and Joaquín were two siblings who were very close, perhaps because of life’s circumstances, the humility of their family, or because they had agreed upon it in another life. They longed for a decoration in their humble home, one that would bring happiness on that date they had never celebrated, but had always longed for.
They managed to get hold of an inexpensive one and, full of pride, placed it in a special corner, making it look beautiful. Negri, that was the cat’s name, knew this; he recognised the curse and prepared himself for his task.
That day, when midnight struck, the children’s parents wept inconsolably, for their children had turned to stone; but what they did not know was that Negri had never abandoned them.
When dawn broke through the windows of the humble little house, the children awoke as if from a dream, bringing joy to their parents, who never understood what had happened. Amidst the adorable brothers lay Negri, motionless, his eyes closed, touching both of them. It seemed as though he too had turned to stone.
They say that cats are the allies of witches, and they are but only of those who have light in their hearts.
