The spear that pierced my chest was taken by him to save my life, although I didn’t realise it at the time.

She was the first to go, black and white, in a silent sigh. I thought she was alone in the garden, but at the moment of her painful passing, when her heart stopped beating in the midst of a fatal attack, I know he was there, by her side, trying to bring her back to life. I know it and I had the evidence, though no one believed me. I always knew.

He was left all alone with me; he no longer had his adopted sister, and soon sadness overwhelmed him, but I could never have imagined the sacrifice he would make for his human mother.

He was grey, the colour of love, a cat with whom a single glance said it all; my confidant, my ally, my night-time guardian. His purrs calmed me and helped me sleep. Those eyes were always fixed on me; they followed me everywhere, as if to ensure my well-being in this world and the next.

It was pure, unconditional and profound love, as deep as infinity. I remember when I found him in the garden as a grown cat, a fighter who had earned the respect of all the other cats in the neighbourhood, and who, in his final days, they would come to visit and keep him company.

I have seen things that few would understand, but my heart as a mother to kittens knew more than people suspect. A connection with these felines that transcends time and universes. Now I understand, now I can see it: they always saw who I was and what would happen to me, what I would become and what I would see in my future life. They knew that my eyes see not only this world but those that surround it, the worlds above and below. They, my faithful protectors and givers of love, a love that is not of this world but of an ancestral one.

Several months had passed since she, my black and white cat, had left us, and it seemed as though the pain had faded, though he appeared distracted, until one day, a piece of news changed everything.

A piece of news that wounded me deeply, a secret buried in my heart that, without hesitation, broke it in two. That spear, those words that pierced me mercilessly and marked the turning point in my life. There are many sorrows in life, but some leave such a mark that they take life itself away.

And he knew it, just as he knew everything, because he could see into my heart, which, now broken, wept inwardly over the immense pain caused by someone who had once brought it joy. A heart full of love, hope and radiance turned black, shattered and without reason. And he knew this from the very moment it happened, though no one else suspected it.

I realised it shortly, very shortly afterwards, that he had exchanged his life for mine, to mend my broken heart and save me from the worst.

My feline son soon fell ill, and no one could explain how he was still alive; his internal deterioration was beyond comprehension. I looked at him as I had so many times before, and I knew what he had done: given me back my life, saved me from something I’ll never know, though I did have my suspicions.

The pains of the soul are paid for with life; it has always been that way, and he, in his infinite love, gave up his life. On that October day fourteen years ago, when his body could no longer even breathe, I took his hand, looked into his eyes and, in a soft voice, said to him: ‘You must leave me and suffer no more; I’m letting you go, I’m setting you free. Thank you for saving me and for your boundless love.’

He sighed and his soul departed, leaving me the life I didn’t know about then, but which he had seen, leaving me two new protectors who are with me today, fourteen years later.

They have always chosen me, cared for me, saved me and loved me so deeply, more than a human being ever could, perhaps because they have seen what I see, and I see what they see.

    Hello Amonet,

So many things defy explanation through the logic we’re used to… yet there is another, much more fascinating logic, seemingly beyond the grasp of most. Maybe the keenest observers, or those who listen closely to their inner voices, know of it. A sad but enlightening story. Thanks for sharing.

    🌟

  • Hello, Amonet.

I'm so sad to hear what happened. I'm so sorry you lost him. Cats are so intelligent and sweet. They know everything that's going on with us.

    Have a wonderful week.

    Good morning, dear friend @avdesing.

Pets are part of our family, and it's always painful to see one of our loved ones leave. Over these 58 years, I've seen several of our furry family members pass away, and it's always very painful.

Tony and Cata are truly precious.

    Have a wonderful day.

Hey! I felt really sad reading this post, although seeing photos of Tony and Cata eases the pain a bit 😹 The death of a cat is always very painful for me because I truly connect with the species. I haven't seen one of my own pass away, but I have watched some in their final moments. Here in Venezuela, amidst the devastation caused by earthquakes, people celebrated not only the lives of rescued humans but also those of pets—cats that spent over a week trapped under the rubble. That really struck me and brought me great joy, even though many of them would never see their families again. It’s an excellent post, but it fills me with nostalgia, hahaha. Happy Monday, my friend!...

Hey!
