Oh tax time is upon us over here... I'd been putting off doing too much on it until the most recent batch of concerts was done... and now that it is, I'm collecting receipts and records to fix up the tax returns for our family.

It is a bit of a slog, I'm usually pretty good at logging my receipts all through the year... clearing them out every couple of weeks or so.... but for some reason, this last year has been a bit chaotic and I'm left with several piles of old receipts and lots and lots digital ones hidden all over the place. So... a bit on par with my wife's organisation efforts.

And that isa situation that I'm not keen to be in this time next year... on the other hand, I've got nothing better to do during the time-killing days whilst on tour on the concert days! So... sitting down with a coffee, a roughly steady internet connection... and the latest pile of receipts!

... and then later, I'll have to trawl through the various digital reports and receipts and collect them all ready to submit into our accounting software...

... and then the final and most confusing step, the reporting to the Tax Office... which we have to work out every year, because some of the categorisations of our self-employed status as freelance musicians is confusing at best and counter-intuitive at other times.

Of course, we could hire an accountant to handle all of this... and trust me, I've been tempted... but that is a good chunk of money that we could spend on other things that we want or need.

... but on the other hand, they probably will be able to get more in returns than we happen to know about! We definitely used one in the Netherlands, but lots of that was due to the nightmare of navigating a tax return in a non-native language!
