Hello there, internet! Today I’m back with another tale by the great Edgar Allan Poe: "MS. Found in a Bottle." The story centers on a man who considers himself highly cultured and rational—a man devoted to facts and science—who sets sail from the Java archipelago. Everything goes smoothly at first, but a terrible storm eventually destroys the ship, killing a large portion of the crew and passengers. Only two people survive; they drift for five agonizingly long days until fate separates them: the sailor vanishes from sight, while the protagonist and narrator collides with a massive, dark shape that turns out to be a ghost ship. Once aboard, he discovers a crew of strange, elderly figures, while the captain appears engrossed in the tedious task of scribbling endless notes. Soon, the protagonist begins taking notes of his own—a tangible record of the bizarre events unfolding on that spectral vessel. Finally, to save these records from destruction, the narrator places his notes inside a bottle, seals it airtight, and casts it into the sea.

Hoy regreso con uno más de los relats del gran Edgar Allan Poe "Manuscrito encontrado en la botella" Este relato trata acerca de un hombre que se considera a sí mismo muy culto y racional, es un hombre apegado a los hechos y a la ciencia, en una ocasión parte en un viaje desde el archipielago de Java en un buque. Todo aiba bien durante los primeros días de viaje pero en algún momento una terrible tormenta destruye el barco matando a buena parte de la tripulación y los pasajeros, sobreviviendo solo dos personas, ambos quedan a la deriva durante cinco días tan largos com agónicos hasta que el destino los separa, pues el marinero se pierde de vista mientras que el protagonista y narrador de la historia choca contra una mole oscura que resultó ser un barco fantasma. Una vez a bordo de este navío se da cuenta que está tripulado por gente muy extraña, todos son ancianos mientras que el capitán parece inmerso en la tediosa tarea de hacer notas interminables, pronto el protagonista también comienza a hacer notas, que no son más que un registro tangible de los extraños sucesos que viven a bordo de ese navío fantasmal, y ya para el final, para poder preservarlas de la devastación, el narrador mete sus notas en una botella, la tapa de manera hermética y las lanza al mar.
This is one of the stories that has made me feel the most tension—especially since I suffer from bathophobia and thalassophobia, both of which relate to the ocean depths and the prospect of being stranded on the open sea. I found the crew's erratic behavior deeply unsettling—particularly the fact that they were speaking a strange, incomprehensible language—but there is a crucial point to consider: the protagonist is initially portrayed as a man deeply grounded in rationality and science. Yet, when faced with the unknown and the uncertain, of what use were his prior studies? This highlights human insignificance, our fragility in the face of catastrophic events, and the sheer vastness of nature.
Este es uno de los relatos donde más tensión he sentido, sobre todo porque soy batofóbica y talasofóbica y ambas fobias tienen que ver con el fondo del mar y eso de quedar varado en alta mar. Me pareció tan inquietante eso de que la tripulación tuviese un comportamiento muy errático y en especial que estuviesen hablando en un idioma extraño e incomprensible, pero hay algo muy importante a tomar en cuanta, y es que al inicio el protagonista se nos muestra como alguien muy apegado a la racionalidad y a la ciencia, pero ante lo desconocido e incierto ¿de qué le sirvieron sus estudios previos? Esto deja en evidencia la insignificancia humana, nuestra fragilidad ante eventos catastróficos y la inmensidad de la naturaleza.
The ship seems to be a form of punishment; the crew is condemned to sail eternally, yet the protagonist clings to his sanity and rationality. That is why he takes notes and is obsessed with leaving a record that might somehow prove his existence—though this could also reflect an obsession with the pursuit of knowledge, given that, rather than seeking an escape route, he devotes himself entirely to studying the crew and the vessel.
El barco parece ser un castigo, la tripulación está condenada a navegar eternamente pero el protagonista aún se aferra a su cordura y racionalidad, por eso toma notas, por eso está obsesionado con dejar un registro que le permita probar de alguna manera su existencia , aunque también pudiera referirse a su obsesión por buscar el conocimiento, ya que en lugar de buscar una vía de escape solo se dedica a estudiar a la tripulación y la nave.
The narrative is not dense at all; on the contrary, it is very dynamic and entertaining. At every moment, we feel just like the narrator facing the mystery—immersed in uncertainty yet eager for knowledge.
La narración no es densa para nada, al contrario, es muy dinámica y entretenida, en todo momento nos sentimos como el narrador ante el misterio, sumergidos en la incertidumbre pero ávidos de conocimientos.
