nvk / Coinkite just apologised to the entire Bitcoin community over a firmware bug that can compromise seeds generated on Coldcard. If you made a seed on one of those devices, the advice is brutal and correct: move the funds now. A hotfix does not save old seeds. You migrate, or you lose a race against people already sweeping wallets.
I am sorry for everyone who did the “responsible” thing — bought the air-gapped sacred object, never typed a seed into a phone, followed the maxi catechism — and still got hit by bad firmware on a trusted device. That is not a user failure. That is the model failing.

Bitcoin culture spent years building extreme paranoia about everything except the boring fundamentals. Not your keys, not your coins. Never a light client. Never a hardware wallet that is not this brand. Never a multisig you can actually live with. Never a recovery path that admits humans make mistakes. Meanwhile the actual chain sits there with almost none of the day-to-day security tools we take for granted on Hive: limited, clunky time-locks, no real account model, no routine on-chain recovery patterns, no social or hierarchical authority that can reverse a catastrophic mistake. Once coins leave a bad seed, they are gone. The chain is doing exactly what it was designed to do — and that design has almost no seatbelts.
So the irony is sharp. The same culture that treats every exchange and every “custodial” arrangement as moral failure handed security theatre to a handful of closed boxes and open-source firmwares… and discovered that AI-assisted attackers can read your “secure” stack faster than your review process can. nvk said as much. He is right about the new paradigm. He is also describing a chain whose main defence against a poisoned RNG or a backdoored RNG fallback is: hope the device was honest when you first generated entropy.
Hive is not magic and Hive is not Bitcoin. But Hive (and systems like it) at least give you more primitive security affordances in the protocol layer — authorities, recovery patterns, structured ops, social recovery style thinking — instead of “one 24-word string and a prayer.” Bitcoin maxis often call that impure. Coldcard just demonstrated what purity costs when the impurity was always in the plastic and the firmware.
If you hold BTC from a Coinkite Coldcard-generated seed: stop reading thinkpieces and move. Temporary exchange or any clean wallet beats principled poverty.
The lesson is not “trust Coinkite less and buy a different metal brick.” The lesson is that paranoia without fundamentals is cosplay. The base chain that cannot help you when a device lies is not “sovereign” in any human sense. It is just final — and final is only a feature when nothing went wrong upstream.
