My Daily Blog 2026#286 (Gdańsk)

Nadszedł czas na powrót do Ostródy, by spędzić w Polsce jeszcze jeden pełny tydzień przed powrotem do Belgii.

[ENG] The time came to make our way back to Ostróda for one final week in Poland before our return journey to Belgium. That departure isn’t until next Sunday, however, so there's no sense getting ahead of ourselves. Driving back from West Pomerania, we broke up the trip with an extended pit stop to stretch our legs in Gdańsk.

[ENG] The weather played along brilliantly, and the city was buzzing with visitors—you’d never guess we were already well into the second half of October. To kick things off, I steered my wife toward a few iconic landmarks we had never visited in person, despite their profound significance to the history of Poland and modern Europe. We stood before the historic Gate No. 2 of the Gdańsk Shipyard, the towering Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers of 1970, the historic BHP Hall where the August 1980 accords were signed, and the striking, rust-clad monolith of the European Solidarity Centre rising right alongside. Regrettably, a tight schedule meant skipping the museum exhibitions inside.

Podobnie rzecz miała się z Muzeum II Wojny Światowej – dynamiczna, pochylona bryła nowoczesnego budynku znakomicie wpisuje się w nadrzeczną panoramę. Otaczające tereny postoczniowe dynamicznie zresztą przekształcają się w nowoczesne kwartały mieszkalne.

[ENG] We had a similar whistle-stop view of the Museum of the Second World War; the building's dynamic, angular silhouette integrates seamlessly with the surrounding waterfront district, where former shipyard yards are rapidly giving way to stylish residential quarters.

[ENG] We spent the remainder of our afternoon strolling along the bustling embankments of the Motława River and down the historic Długi Targ (Long Market). Crowds were packed wall-to-wall, occasionally requiring a bit of navigating to squeeze through. It was a thoroughly enjoyable breather in autumn Gdańsk, particularly under such warm, generous sunshine.
