Que tal amigos de Feel Good! Ya van a ser 2 meses desde que salimos forzozamente de vacaciones en la Universidad producto del doble sismo que sufrimos aquí en Venezuela. Aún hay muchas cosas por organizar, como saber cuales estudiantes están en situación de no poder ir a clases y cuales si. De igual manera pasa con los profesores, muchos de ellos vivían en las costas de La Guaira, algunos no lo lograron y otros lo perdieron todo, por lo que se hace necesario atender su situación y evaluar si pueden reincorporarse a las actividades. Por mi parte, yo terminé mi carga docente y el edificio donde vivo tuvo daños moderados, así que puedo y tengo que reincorporarme ya que soy el jefe de cátedra. La prioridad más importante era evaluar el estado de las estructuras y como estaba avanzando los trabajos de reconstrucción de las áreas afectadas en los laboratorios docentes, y esa fue la razón por la que tuve que ir estos días de la semana para supervisar las condiciones de los laboratorios. Aproveché entonces este momento, para capturar algunas fotografías para compartirles en este concurso #127 de Phone Photography.

Fui entonces esta mañana nuevamente para algo muy específico, ver las condiciones de los equipos en los laboratorios. Llegué a primera hora a la Facultad, todavía no salía el sol, quería aprovechar la mañana para probar los equipos. Llegué a la dirección y muy amablemente me recibieron con un delicioso café que me levantó el ánimo, pero aún tenía que esperar que llegara el jefe de los depósitos para que me abriera el cuarto de equipos. Mientras lo esperaba estuve paseando por los espacios reconstruidos, como pueden ver la facultad se ve muy vacía, a veces me da nostalgia ver mi facultad así, es inevitable pensar en mis días de estudiante, como extraño esos tiempos! Por eso siempre le digo a mis estudiantes que disfruten todo lo que puedan esos momentos de su vida en la universidad, porque no volverán.

With the first light of dawn, I headed to the laboratories, and it was nice to see the spaces restored. The videos I saw after the double earthquake were terrible; there were cracks in the stairwells and some columns, so I was worried about whether we would be able to reopen the labs by mid- to late September. Afterward, I checked the equipment; most of it was in good condition. The storage area itself seemed intact; only a few tiles had fallen off. I then proceeded to evaluate the lab's centrifuge. It's the most sensitive and expensive piece of equipment the department has, so it's important to make sure it's working properly. What I did was a brief enzymatic activity on a previously centrifuged biological sample, and to my delight, it gave a positive reaction! The equipment was working well, and the reagents for the assay were in good condition.

I left the labs quite pleased; everything was working correctly, and it was only 11:00 a.m. I took one last stroll around the faculty building and ordered another coffee before leaving. I enjoyed the peace and quiet of the faculty grounds before September 7th, when activities resume, so for now I'm sitting in the main plaza enjoying my coffee and feeling good. Hey friends of Feel Good! It's almost been two months since we were forced to go on vacation from the University due to the double earthquake we suffered here in Venezuela. There are still many things to organize, such as determining which students are unable to attend classes and which ones can. The same applies to the professors; many of them lived on the coast of La Guaira. Some didn't make it, and others lost everything, so it's necessary to address their situation and assess whether they can return to their duties. Personally, I finished my teaching load, and the building where I live sustained moderate damage, so I can and must return since I'm the head of my department. The top priority was assessing the condition of the structures and the progress of the reconstruction work in the affected areas of the teaching labs, which is why I had to go there this week to check on the lab conditions. I took advantage of this time to capture some photos to share with you in this 127th edition of Phone Photography.

So this morning I went again for something very specific: to check on the condition of the equipment in the labs. I went to the Faculty first thing, before sunrise, wanting to use the morning to test the equipment. I arrived at the administration office and was very kindly welcomed with a delicious coffee that lifted my spirits, but I still had to wait for the head of storage to arrive so he could open the equipment room for me. While I waited for him, I wandered around the rebuilt spaces. As you can see, the faculty building looks very empty. Sometimes it makes me nostalgic to see my faculty like this; it's impossible not to think about my student days. How I miss those times! That's why I always tell my students to enjoy these moments of their university life as much as they can, because they won't come back.

Ya con la luz del alba, me puse en marcha a los laboratorios y fue agradable ver los espacios recuperados, porque los videos que vi posterior al doble sismo era terribles, habían grietas en las escaleras y algunas columnas, por lo que estaba preocupado si estaríamos en condiciones de reanudar los laboratorios a mediados/finales de septiembre. Posteriormente revisé los equipos la mayoría estaban en buen estado, el mismo depósito parecía intacto, sólo algunas cerámicas se habían caído. Procedí hacer entonces una evaluación de la centrífuga del laboratorio, es el equipo más sensible y costoso que tiene el departamento, así que es importante estar seguro que esta funcionando bien. Lo que hice, fue una breve actividad enzimática en una muestra biológica previamente centrifugada, y para mi alegría dio reacción positiva! El equipo estaba funcionando bien y los reactivos para el ensayo estaban en buen estado.

Salí bastante contento de los laboratorios, toda estaba funcionando correctamente y apenas eran las 11 am, di una ultima vuelta por la facultad y pedí otro café antes de irme. Disfruté del silencio y la paz de los espacios de la facultad antes del 7 de septiembre que es cuando se reinician las actividades, así que por ahora me senté en la plaza principal de la facultad disfrutando mi café y sintiéndome bien.
