My participation in the #SMARP Contest - Round #293: Back to Plaza Candelaria: Capturing reflections during the reconstruction [Eng/Esp]

Hello, friends at Shadow Hunters! Welcome to my entry for the SMARP contest round #293. Yesterday, I finally received my first paycheck from the new job I was practically dragged into three weeks ago. I took the opportunity to go for a walk at Plaza Candelaria with my nephew and his grandmother; I wanted to treat them to a meal out—something we hadn't done in a long time—and also visit the plaza, which had been heavily damaged by the double earthquake we experienced four and a half months ago.

The area stretching from this part of downtown Caracas toward the east of the city saw the most destruction. While there was damage—albeit minor—in the center where I live and slightly further west, the majority of the casualties occurred in the zone extending from here to the east. This plaza, in particular, suffered significant damage, and after more than four months, I finally found a moment to visit it. I was very pleased to see that the reconstruction work was well underway—which is only fitting, given that the remains of the recently beatified José Gregorio Hernández are located here. The main church on the plaza will require the most work to rebuild, as the damage was severe, but the plaza itself has already been refurbished. I took the opportunity to capture some reflections while my nephew enjoyed an ice cream.

Initially, I wanted to capture reflections in the plaza where the large statue of Saint José Gregorio stands, but it was empty—likely because they are still restoring it after the earthquake. So, I moved further up to where there were rectangular benches—long, polished-granite-like structures with highly reflective surfaces where people can sit and rest. Since there were hardly any people in this part of the plaza, I was able to capture the wall's entire reflective surface. My favorite shots were the ones showing the intense blue sky and fluffy clouds reflected across the wall, complemented by the perfect composition of reflected trees and palms; it literally looks as though you are sitting on a mirror. I then moved to the far end of the wall and captured the avenue's buildings reflected at the top, adding to the composition of blue sky, clouds, and treetops, with the buildings finally appearing in the corner of the wall. Viewing the image as a whole gives the plaza an air of harmony and peace; it makes you want to sit and contemplate the scene. If not for the heat, I would have stayed longer, waiting for someone to sit down so I could capture their reflection, but I truly enjoyed seeing Plaza Candelaria regain the luster it had before the earthquake.

We ended up having a relaxing time at the plaza; I really needed a break from work to spend time with my family. Revisiting the plaza and seeing people there again made me very happy, so I hope you enjoyed the reflection shot and the story behind it. See you in the next SMARP contest. Best regards!

Saludos!
