Starting Gossip Girl from the very beginning, and I have to say that “Pilot” does a surprisingly good job of making me curious about almost everyone immediately.
Serena's return to Manhattan is the center of everything, but what caught my attention most was how much tension already exists beneath the glamorous surface. Serena and Blair clearly have history, Nate is hiding something, Dan feels completely outside this world, and Chuck... well, he certainly doesn't make a good first impression.
What I liked is that the episode doesn't waste much time. We quickly understand the social hierarchy of the Upper East Side and how Gossip Girl can turn someone's private life into public entertainment within seconds. For a show that premiered in 2007, that idea actually feels even more relevant today.
Serena and Dan were probably my favorite part of the episode. Their scenes give the story a little warmth among all the secrets, jealousy and privilege. At the same time, the unresolved tension between Serena, Blair and Nate gives me a good reason to continue.
As a pilot, it did exactly what I wanted: it introduced the world, created several conflicts and made me want to watch episode two.

A strong beginning. Not everything feels completely natural yet, but the characters and all those secrets already have my attention.
