[Music] One of the 5 songs that broke world records in 1964 -- "Can't Buy Me Love" -- 1964

On this occasion, I'm very pleased to bring you another review of a song by my favorite band, The Beatles. This time, it's the turn of another of their gems, a song that has brought them immense satisfaction as a group and us as fans: I'm referring to the unforgettable and immortal "Can't Buy Me Love."

This song, like most of their tracks, is credited to the Lennon-McCartney duo and was included on both the album and the soundtrack of the film "A Hard Day's Night." It was recorded in Paris, France, in January 1964, along with other songs, including "You Can't Do That," which was also part of the single included on the same album. This was just days before Beatlemania took off worldwide, which would happen in February 1964 when they arrived in the United States.

The video I'm sharing with you today is from one of the most memorable scenes in that film, when they go out to have fun in the back of the recording studio. They start jumping and running around a field and other places. For me, that was the funniest part of the movie because they were running, falling, playing, making faces, and everything else throughout the song. It was really funny, haha.

I believe the meaning of the title and the lyrics themselves is about love prevailing over things like money. I think that's the central theme. However, over the years, other meanings have been given to it, whether it's the role of money in a romantic relationship, or the idea that with money you can even buy love. There are two opposing forces there: love and buying. But there are many interpretations of that love, or of what it means to buy. With money, obviously, you can have the world at your feet, but if you don't have love, money can't buy that, because love isn't a thing, it's a feeling. I think Paul's approach to the song is brilliant.

Remember yesterday I told you about the record they set in April 1964 when they dominated the top 5 spots on the Billboard charts? Well, "Can't Buy Me Love" was one of those 5 songs (along with "She Loves You," "Twist and Shout," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and "Please Please Me") that would change positions over the weeks, but they always held the top 5 spots.

I was also struck by the fact that this song appeared twice in the film, in different circumstances and scenes. In other words, they used the song as background music for two distinct situations in the movie. There's another song in this film that also appears twice in the overall plot, but that's a story for another review, which I'll gladly share when the time comes.

It was a staple at concerts and live performances throughout the Beatles' world tours of 1964 and part of 1965. Even Paul McCartney, after the Beatles' sad breakup in 1970, performed it solo and with his 70s band Wings, and of course, even today in 2026. The musical lineup is identical to that of previous tracks: Paul on lead vocals and bass, John on rhythm guitar, George on lead guitar, and Ringo on drums, always produced by George Martin.
