House of Ga'a is a 2024 Nigerian historical epic directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters and featuring a talented cast, including Femi Branch, Mike Afolarin, Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham. Released on Netflix in July 2024, the movie takes viewers back to the old Oyo Empire, offering a gripping story filled with power, ambition, betrayal and political intrigue.
It tells the story of a man called Bashorun Ga'a, a very powerful, formidable and respected man who grew grew form being a warrior to being one of the most powerful figure in his time. But after claiming a lot of influence and commanding respect, it seems all of those things get to his head, and he begins to even desire more.
To an extent that he turned a remover and placer of kings. He removes kings at will and puts those he wants in their position. You know we have different kinds of movies, some you watch for entertainment, some you watch for hype's sake, and the like. But this particular movie, doesn't fall under any of those categories, instead, it will keep you glued to your screen till the end of the movie and make you pause at each interval to really question the kind of man Bashorun is becoming.
And to be honest with you, there are some traits or attributes I really like about him, I mean Bashorun Ga'a, he's powerful, bold, respected, feared, and all. He's not the kind of man who would walk into a room and whose presence will not be felt/known. The only problem was that he got power-drunk, and it affected him.
This is not to say that he isn't a good man, of course, he was a good man at first. He protected his own people, he won lots of battles, he did all he could to protect his people, and his people loved and followed him too. But you know, after all of those great achievements, he began to act as a controller, questioning the decisions of kings and doing as he pleased. Even his own kinsmen, children, and relatives began to suffer because of his decisions.
I forgot to mention who acted as Bashorun Ga'a; his name is Femi Branch, a very good actor at that. I love him especially because he has actions and puts his all to kill whatever role he's being given. Well, he did not disappoint me here either. The movie, I will definitely rate it at a solid 90, yeah. It is worth it. The costumes used are perfect; the local dialect being spoken is top-notch; the settings of the movies are good; and the graphics—they did justice to them, and I am saying I enjoyed watching this movie.
And I love how the movie clearly showed that power can build and at the same time destroy, depending on who's holding it. It's a very good one to give a watch. Yeah, though there are certain characters who didn't do well as I will expect them too, but the one who did well helped to complement them.
At the end of the day, Bashorun Ga'a was defeated by his own blood; I mean, he was so busy looking out and trying to put everyone under his feet, not realizing that the ones closest to him would be the ones to bring him down. One of the few Nigerian movies that ended the way I would have loved it too.
House of Ga’a makes a strong effort to tell the story of the Oyo Empire in an entertaining yet educational way. The drama seems to aim for more than just paying historical homage; it also seeks to consider the nature of power and how it sculpts individuals and societies.
