The Sound of Music is both a movie and a musical. It's a beautiful film adaptation of what I consider one of the greatest musicals ever written.
Maria is a free-spirited young Austrian woman studying to become a nun at Nonnberg Abbey but she isn't exactly the perfect nun. She loves singing, exploring the mountains and enjoying the beauty of nature, and her free-spirited personality often gets her into trouble at the convent.
Eventually, Mother Abbess sends Maria to the villa of retired naval officer Captain Georg von Trapp a widower, to be the new governess to his seven children: Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta, and Gretl. The Captain has been raising his children using strict military discipline following the death of his wife.
They have scared away several governesses by playing tricks. Although the children misbehave at first, Maria responds with kindness and patience, and soon the children come to trust and respect her.
Instead of controlling the children like their father does, she takes her time to understand them and later gains their trust. She also introduces music to them, takes them outside, makes them enjoy being children and gradually brings happiness to their home.
She didn't just teach them how to sing, she taught them how to live joyfully.
One of my favourite parts of the movie is the music. From “Do-Re-Mi” to “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and the unforgettable “The Sound of Music. It has a way of smoothing the soul.
I also love how gentle Maria is with the children. Her kind heart and cheerful nature slowly brings laughter, singing and life back to their home.
Then, comes the romance between Maria and Captain von Trapp.
At first, their relationship is so complicated. He is so strict and difficult to deal with. But as time goes on, and he spends more time at home, he begins to notice how loving Maria is. He later finds himself falling in love with her and with time, they begin to understand each other and their relationship gradually develops into something beautiful.
He starts laughing, singing again and reconnects with his children.
Maria doesn't accept the relationship, when she realises she has fallen in love with the Captain, she runs away from the house back to the convent. She is scared that her feeling for him are wrong and it's failing in her commitment to her religious life.
Mother Superior realises something wrong and talks to Maria about it. Maria eventually opens up to her. She doesn't condemn her for falling in love, instead, she encourages her to explore her feelings and follow her heart.
But just when everything finally seems perfect, Austria is about to come under Germany's control, and the Captain may soon find himself drafted into the German Navy and forced to fight against his own country.
The most striking thing about the movie is how beautiful it is. The mountains, the abbey, the home, the music, and the people are all right out of a fairy tale.
In the end, you discover that life is a mystery, it always has unpredictable endings. Maria already had her life all planned out, that is, to be a Nun but she unexpectedly finds love and eventually becomes a mother to seven children. Sometimes, life can take us somewhere we never expected. But I guess, that's the beauty of life❤️.
