Over the years, Splinterlands has been evolving, and clear evidence of this is that the ecosystem is no longer limited to semi-automatic battles between cards on a battlefield where we hope the battle will be resolved quickly. Instead, at the time, the team decided to greatly expand the “Praetoria” universe and launched what is now known as “Lands,” where you’re not just a player—you literally become a landowner who must manage and/or administer your resources to progress, extract resources, construct buildings, and, of course, earn rewards along the way.

But when new players arrive, they have no idea what these plots of land mean, how they work, or what to do, since they find this very complex; they don’t know how to get started the right way, which causes many to drift away and stick with the traditional gameplay in formats, tournaments, and guild battles. However, setting aside all that complexity, I’m here to explain in simple terms—in this short beginner’s guide—the first steps to getting started in “Praetoria” so you can put your first plot of land to work smartly and safely.

The 3 Preparatory Steps + Energy Activation (Sources of Power and DEC)

Okay, to understand the basics and how this works, we need to consider three steps—a sort of preparation process we all need to follow to get off on the right foot with “Land Plots.” So, starting now, pay close attention so you can follow along:

Acquisition – Claims – Prospecting

• Step 1: Acquisition: The first thing you need is the digital asset representing a “Plot of Land.” There are two ways to do this: the first is to go to the game’s official marketplace—either through the official interface or through secondary marketplaces like “Peakmonsters,” for example—where “Plots” that have already been mapped in the vast world of “Praetoria” are listed. This is the simplest method, but there’s another option: acquiring assets related to unclaimed or unprospected land, which means you’ll be purchasing a PLOT, TRACT, or REGION.

• Step 2: Claiming: As I mentioned earlier, in this step we’ll proceed if you have tokens for unclaimed land—I’m referring to PLOTS, TRACTS, or REGIONS. So, assuming you have them, what you need to do is go to the “Lands” section within the game and then perform the action called “Claim.” This will officially link that plot to your account.

• Step 3: Prospecting: Once you’ve claimed the land, the next step is to “prospect” it—or, as I also call it, “survey” it. When you complete this step, the system will display the geographical characteristics of your plot, and this is where you’ll see the following:

  • Terrain Type: Examples of terrain types include Plains, Desert, Mountains, Swamp, Forest, and Canyon, but there are a few more.

  • Category or Rarity: Here you’ll find out the rarity of your plot of land, which can be (Common, Rare, Epic, Legendary, and Mythic), but it can also be a land type ranging from (Natural, Magical, Occupied, Castle, and Keep).

NOTE: This is very important, because we’ll know what kind of land we’ll have, however, in my opinion, the best option is to go to a market like “Peakmonsters” to choose the plots of land we want—ones that, of course, align with each of your interests—because, depending on which one you choose, you can focus on producing “Grain,” extracting the remaining resources, or, failing that, obtaining SPS.

Energy Activation (Power Sources and DEC) + Workers and Production Points

The next most important thing we need to do once everything else is ready is to take care of the “Energy Activation.” What I mean by this is that no plot of land can begin operations without a power source, so we must set up a power source—but don’t worry, I’ll explain everything step by step:

• The simplest option: The first option we have is the simplest: purchase what’s called a “Power Core” and lock up some DECS so it can run without interruptions. This option is very affordable—it could cost around 5,000 DEC.

• Runi Cards: RuniCores are part of an NFT collection that was launched on OpenSea quite some time ago. They functioned as legendary-rarity cards within the game, but they also serve as power cores within a plot of land. However, these NFTs are somewhat expensive, though to be honest, I haven’t checked the price in a while.

Workers and Production Points (PP)

Now that we’ve figured out the energy required to make the plot of land operational, we need workers to extract the resources needed to start building. The maximum number of workers allowed on a plot is 5, so you need to choose them based on what I’m about to explain, since the Production Points (PP) you need—which determine how much they produce—depend on these factors:

• Card Edition: Cards from older editions have higher Production Points.

• Rarity: A card’s rarity also increases its PP, so the higher the rarity, the more PP you’ll have.

• Card Level: Of course, placing a level 1 legendary worker is not the same as placing one at the maximum level; the higher the level, the more PP it will have.

• Card Variant: If the card is gold- or black-foiled, it will yield much more PP than regular cards.

NOTE: For each of these cards, you need to stake a certain amount of DECS; if the resource requirement were 10,000 DEC per card—that is, about 50,000 DEC per plot—and if we add the Power Core, it would total about 55,000 DEC.
