The harmful effects of social media on students' lives

In the current context, we live in a modern world—a world that, despite its advancements, brings with it significant drawbacks. Today, I would like to discuss the harmful impact of mobile phones on the lives of students.

Mobile phones were originally invented to improve communication. Over time, they evolved to allow us to watch videos and listen to music, effectively replacing radios. As technology has continued to advance, mobile phones have gained even more capabilities. In the past, people used dedicated gaming consoles; today, those devices have largely become obsolete, as many now play various games on their mobile phones. The issue is not merely the act of playing games, but rather how gaming and social media engagement are exerting a deeply negative influence on our students.

I have observed a concerning trend: students are squandering their precious time. Instead of focusing on their studies, they spend their time at their study desks playing games or watching short-form videos (reels). They lack the motivation to study, preferring instead to spend their time chatting with friends on their phones.

While mobile phones were intended to enhance communication, their misuse is proving detrimental to our students. As the use of these devices continues to rise, it is taking an increasingly negative toll on their lives.

A student should go to school to prepare for their future through education. Instead, many are preoccupied with browsing the internet and engaging in social media activities. Furthermore, they spend their time playing games, leaving them with little to no focus on their studies. This is having a severely adverse effect on their lives.

Therefore, as parents, we must be vigilant. Students should not be given mobile phones. If communication is necessary, we can provide them with basic, simple mobile phones intended solely for voice calls. Smartphones and similar sophisticated gadgets have a harmful impact and end up wasting the precious lives of students. Let us, then, choose to put books into the hands of our students rather than mobile phones. And I believe they must be made aware of the harmful aspects of social media, as well as the dangers associated with certain online games.

Cell phones should be used for their intended purpose; valuable time is being wasted on games, which even teach violence. Social media, with its videos of various content, is also problematic, sometimes creating confusion.
