The first thing that catches your attention when you delve into Korean culture is discovering that the way age is counted doesn’t always match the international age system (Man-nai / 만나이).
You’re already 1 year old at birth: This is because the time spent in the womb is factored in.
Celebrating birthdays on New Year’s Day: Regardless of the month you were born, in the traditional system everyone adds a year to their age on January 1. For example, a baby born in late December could be 2 years old in Korean at just one month old!
Although in recent years they’ve adopted the international standard for legal procedures, socially it remains a key factor in understanding how people interact.
The Importance of Hierarchy and Respect in Language
In the video, Liry explains that asking someone’s age isn’t rude or impolite—it’s a social necessity. Depending on whether the person is older or younger, the way you speak and the level of formality change completely:
Asking a friend or someone younger (Informal): 몇 살이야? (Myeot sar-iya?).
Asking politely/formally: 나이가 어떻게 되세요? (Naiga eotteokke doeseeyo?). Adding “Sinlye-jiman” (Excuse me...). at the beginning makes the phrase sound very natural and respectful.
For older people/seniors: The honorific term 연세 (Yeonse) is used instead of 나이 (Nai), asking 연세가 어떻게 되세요?.
The Use of Native Korean Numbers
Another interesting detail covered in the lesson is that native Korean numbers are used to express age (unlike in official procedures, where Sino-Korean numbers are used). Additionally, the numbers 1 through 4 and 20 undergo slight changes when combined with the word 살 (sar / year):
1 = 한 살 (Han sar).
2 = 두 살 (Du sar).
20 = 스물 becomes 스무 살 (Seumu sar).

Preguntarle a un amigo o a alguien más joven (Informal): 몇 살이야? (¿Myeot sar-iya?).
