She's Flying – A 5-Minute Freewrite and Personal Update

She's Flying

A 5-Minute Fiction

It was like flying.

The wheels newly greased. The path paved and smooth. But the soaring she felt was sparked by the man riding beside her.

He had not said a word as of yet. She had walked her normal route that morning to get her coffee, down Broadway to 5th and across to Starbucks from there. Right in front of the coffee shop he had descended from the tourist carriage with his hand extended.

Probably it was his eyes. Glacial blue, but the color isn't what arrested her. She could swear the pupils actually swirled. Billowed even, up and up like growing cumulonimbus clouds.

There had been no question in her body about taking his hand and ascending.

Now they flew through Central Park. All the leaves were brown and whirling beneath the wheels. The tunnel beckoned and they responded, together, in a pause between breaths, embracing the narrowing space between them.

In the tunnel was darkness and the grey sky beyond shed no light and she didn't care.

Personal Update

My days are full working the new farm, which I wrote about in Suddenly, I'm a Farmer. I spend much of my day communing with and feeding goats and chickens and pigs, from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. In between feeding and maintaining fences, I'm cutting firewood, digging new garden beds, mowing grass, and so on. And on.

I love the physical activity. It actually provides a nice counterpoint to the writing. I feel like I'm writing in a more engaged, wheels on the ground sort of way than when I had cleared my schedule of a job and everything except writing. There's a balance to the days.

I haven't been blogging much, but I have been working on a longer short story. Looks like it will be between two or three thousand words when it is finished, which is about three times longer than my usual. It might be too long for Hive; we'll see.

Orienting myself to the new environment has been a process. It inspired a poem, Backward Thomas and Once I Had a Container. The abundance and gratitude I discussed in the poem continue to grow. The farm owners have even started paying me some cash, which is awesome. I'm excited for the opportunity to get back to providing the Creative Coin Fund with a steady influx of fiat.

Good things.

And of course it's the inner world that matters....

  • I am so glad you are enjoying your new phase of life, and that you still find time to write. Balance in life can be tricky to obtain, and it's great when it happens.

This truly was a joy to read, Cliff. It was almost poetic, I'd say. I think that's a sign of truly inspired writing, like you've captured a feeling and are bringing it to life in the minds of the readers.

I'm honestly waiting for you to write longer pieces. 3000 words isn't long enough in my opinion. Where's the novel? dang nammit Me want read

I hope they fall madly in love, both of them. Seems like she is already all in.

I just read your first farm post. Sounds like a great step to have taken! I wish you fresh air, deep and restful sleeps, and lots of time to pursue your dreams.
