There are very few video games capable of influencing the entire gaming industry before they are even released. Grand Theft Auto VI is proving that it belongs to that very exclusive group.
Rockstar Games has managed to turn GTA 6 into much more than another highly anticipated release. The game is becoming a reason for people to buy new consoles, follow gaming news, watch trailers and even discover music featured in its promotional material.
The latest evidence of this so-called “GTA 6 effect” is particularly interesting. After Rockstar released its extended look at the game, sales of current-generation consoles increased significantly in the United Kingdom.
According to figures reported by The Game Business, PlayStation 5 sales increased by around 33%, while Xbox Series X|S sales grew by approximately 34% in the following week.
That is an impressive result for a game that has not even reached store shelves yet.
It also demonstrates something important about the current console generation. For years, many players have had little reason to upgrade their hardware. The PS5 and Xbox Series generation has struggled to create the same sense of urgency that previous generations achieved.
GTA 6 could change that.
The game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at release. That means millions of players who are still using older hardware will need to upgrade if they want to experience Rockstar's new open world.
And Rockstar's influence is not limited to console sales.
The recent extended presentation became a massive entertainment event, with the GTA 6 reveal generating enormous attention across platforms. Netflix even hosted the presentation, turning a traditional video game trailer into something closer to a global media event.
The effect has also reached the music industry. Several songs featured in the trailer experienced huge increases in streaming activity after appearing in GTA 6's promotional material. One track reportedly saw its U.S. streams increase by more than 3,000%.
This is why GTA 6 is so fascinating.
It is not simply competing against other games.
It is competing for people's attention across the entire entertainment industry.
Of course, it would be premature to claim that GTA 6 will completely transform the console market. Analysts have already warned that the increase in hardware sales may not be enough to solve the industry's broader problems.
Newzoo, for example, expects GTA and other major releases to help increase the current-generation user base, but not necessarily produce an extraordinary recovery.
Still, the signal is clear.
A single game can create demand for hardware, increase interest in streaming platforms, boost music consumption and dominate social media conversations months before launch.
