Light No Fire could follow No Man’s Sky’s path for a decade

There is something really interesting about Light No Fire. Years have passed since Hello Games revealed the project, and despite the enormous amount of attention it generated, the studio continues to be surprisingly careful about what it shows. We still know relatively little compared with other games of a similar scale, but the information that has appeared over time makes it clear that this is not just another survival game.

Hello Games seems to have very ambitious plans for its new open-world adventure, and the most interesting part is that the studio wants Light No Fire to have a very long life. Sean Murray has talked about the possibility of working on the game for many years, potentially even a decade, following a philosophy similar to what the company has done with No Man’s Sky.

That comparison is probably one of the biggest reasons why I am interested in this project. No Man’s Sky had a very difficult launch, but Hello Games never abandoned it. Instead, the studio continued adding content, systems, exploration options, vehicles, creatures, multiplayer features and many other improvements. After years of updates, the game became something completely different from what players experienced at launch.

Light No Fire could follow a similar path, but this time Hello Games has a fantasy world to work with. That opens up a huge number of possibilities. Instead of exploring planets and traveling through space, players will be able to explore a massive fantasy world filled with mountains, oceans, forests, creatures and other environments.

What really catches my attention is the scale of this world. Hello Games has described it as a planet with the scale of Earth, meaning that exploration could become one of the main reasons to keep playing. A world this large also gives the developers an enormous amount of space for future content.

And this is where the idea of supporting the game for ten years becomes interesting. If Hello Games continues following the model established with No Man’s Sky, Light No Fire could receive completely new systems long after its original release. We could eventually see new creatures, transportation methods, construction options, regions, activities, quests and even entire gameplay mechanics that nobody is expecting right now.

The community could also play an important role in that evolution. Hello Games has learned a lot from its relationship with No Man’s Sky players, and feedback has helped shape the game over the years. If Light No Fire is designed with enough flexibility, the developers could use that same relationship to decide what the game needs next.

Of course, there is still a big question mark surrounding the project because we haven't seen enough gameplay to know exactly how everything will work. The concept sounds fantastic, but turning such an ambitious world into a fun game is another challenge entirely.

Still, I think Hello Games has earned some trust after everything it accomplished with No Man’s Sky. Light No Fire doesn't need to be perfect on day one if the studio can build a strong foundation and continue improving it.

For me, that is what makes Light No Fire so exciting. It could start as a survival and exploration game, but over several years it could evolve into something much bigger. If Hello Games really supports it for a decade, we may eventually look back at the launch version and barely recognize the game.
