Microsoft plans to place ads in Xbox games and online services

Microsoft may have found a new way to make players close a game instead of continuing to play it. A recent patent from the Xbox company describes a system designed to introduce advertising directly into video game sessions, and the idea is already raising questions about how far monetization can go before it starts getting in the way of the experience.

they have registered a new patent that is already attracting plenty of attention from the gaming community, and the reason is quite simple: the company is exploring a system that could introduce advertising directly into video game sessions.

The patent describes a content management system capable of understanding what is happening during a player's session and determining when it would be an appropriate moment to interrupt the experience with promotional content. In other words, the system would not simply display an advertisement at random. It would try to find a moment when the player is less likely to be affected by the interruption.

According to the patent, those moments could include situations in which the player's character is in a safe location, after completing an objective, following a boss fight or during other natural pauses in the action. The idea is to use information from the game itself to determine when an advertisement could be shown.

There is another detail that makes the proposal particularly interesting. The system could give players advertising credits that delay future interruptions. Watching promotional content would therefore become a way of earning additional time without another advertisement appearing.

This concept is similar to a model that has existed in mobile games for years. Players are offered an advertisement and receive something in return, turning the commercial into part of the game's progression rather than simply placing a traditional banner on the screen.

The difference is that Microsoft is exploring how this concept could work within interactive software on a much broader scale. The patent specifically describes a system capable of suspending the player's interaction with the application while promotional audiovisual content is presented.

It is easy to understand why the idea has generated such a strong reaction. Players have traditionally expected console and PC games to leave advertising outside the actual gameplay experience, particularly in premium releases. Introducing interruptions, even during supposedly safe moments, could fundamentally change that relationship.

At the same time, there is an important detail that should not be overlooked: this is only a patent. Microsoft registers numerous technologies and concepts, and a patent does not mean that the company has decided to implement the system in Xbox games. Other recent reporting has also highlighted that the proposal should not be interpreted as confirmation of a future product.

For now, the patent simply shows one possible direction Microsoft is investigating for advertising within games. Whether players will ever actually encounter these interruptions while playing remains unknown.

Still, the reaction is understandable. Gamers have become increasingly sensitive to monetization systems appearing inside their games, and the idea of stopping a session to watch an advertisement is unlikely to be welcomed by everyone.

Microsoft may never use this technology. But the fact that such a system is being explored is enough to start a much bigger conversation about where the line between playing a game and watching advertising should be drawn.
