Star Citizen wanted to rival GTA VI (It's no joke)

For a game that has spent more than a decade in development, Squadron 42 continues to find new ways to surprise its audience. The single-player campaign connected to Star Citizen was once presented as one of the most ambitious projects in the industry, with Cloud Imperium Games repeatedly raising expectations about what players could eventually experience.

Now, however, the studio has decided to delay the game once again, and this time the reason has a lot to do with one of the biggest releases in gaming history: Grand Theft Auto VI.

Cloud Imperium Games had previously targeted the final quarter of 2026 for the release of Squadron 42. That plan has now changed, with the studio moving the launch window to the second quarter of 2027.

Chris Roberts, the company's founder and one of the main figures behind Star Citizen, explained that releasing the game near GTA 6 could make it extremely difficult for Squadron 42 to receive the attention the studio believes it deserves.

The reasoning is easy to understand. Whenever Rockstar releases a new Grand Theft Auto game, the entire gaming industry tends to revolve around it. GTA 6 is expected to dominate social media, YouTube, streaming platforms and gaming news for weeks or even months.

Even though its initial release is planned for consoles rather than PC, its influence will almost certainly extend across the entire gaming community.

That makes the decision particularly interesting because Roberts has previously spoken about Squadron 42 in extremely ambitious terms. The project has often been positioned as a major cinematic experience capable of competing with some of the biggest names in gaming.

At different points, the expectations surrounding the campaign have been so high that comparisons with GTA 6 were not completely out of the question.

Now, however, Cloud Imperium Games appears to believe that avoiding GTA 6 is the smarter strategy. Rather than launching Squadron 42 during a period when Rockstar's game could dominate the conversation, the studio wants to give its own project a clearer opportunity to capture the attention of players and the media.

There is another factor that makes this delay significant: Squadron 42 has already been in development for an exceptionally long time. Work on the campaign began around 2014, and the project has gone through numerous changes and delays.

Over the years, Cloud Imperium Games has continued to expand its ambitions, adding more technology, cinematic elements and gameplay systems to the experience.

The enormous amount of money invested in Star Citizen and Squadron 42 has also contributed to the expectations surrounding the project. The development has been supported by more than a billion dollars in crowdfunding, making the eventual release much more than an ordinary game launch.

Players have been waiting for years to discover whether the final product can truly justify the extraordinary amount of time and resources invested in it.

Cloud Imperium Games has said that more information about Squadron 42 will arrive in the coming months, including demonstrations for selected creators and backers. The studio is expected to provide additional details before eventually announcing a specific release date.

For now, Squadron 42 remains scheduled for the second quarter of 2027. Avoiding GTA 6 may give the game a better chance to stand on its own, but it also creates another challenge for Cloud Imperium Games. After so many years of promises and delays, players are no longer simply waiting for Squadron 42 to arrive.

They are waiting to see whether the finished game can finally live up to the enormous expectations that have surrounded it for more than a decade.
