One of the many things I have come to understand over the years is that nobody can survive on planet earth as an island, we all need health at some point in our lives because it is impossible to do everything by ourselves even with the means. So just imagine being in a tight spot where you are in desperate need of help for a serious problem that requires an immediate financial solution. Let's say you are a student with a tuition fee problem hanging over your neck as the deadline is just a few days away and if you don't pay for it, you end up losing the academic program but making payment is not something you can achieve by yourself before the time elapses. Then out of the blue, help comes from an unexpected source you problem told your problem just to clear your head. The whole thing happens so fast that it even pushes you to the point of tears because it's not even a loan but free money to sort a need.
But as you turn around out of excitement to probably celebrate this massive charity, you catch a glimpse of a camera recording the entire interaction, placed at the right angle where a person who's expressing his/her gratitude would never think to look. Suddenly that act of kindness turns into a stinging sensation straight to the heart. The realization that this person who is supposedly trying to help you is not doing it from his heart but just to get the recognition of helping someone and the validation from the online audience. This leaves us with an uncomfortable question: "if a person helps you just to get attention does that make it any less valuable".
Scrolling through any social media platform, one is bound to come across contents that revolves helping people. While it is all nice and all, one also has to admit that a lot of people are not really doing it for the greater good rather it is just a means to grow their following, boost their account and gain recognition. I know a guy that never keeps his lips sealed whenever he extends a helping hand to people. Once he helps with anything, just be certain that every mutual friend is aware of the situation. At some point people started turning down his offer as it felt like he was indirectly mocking them and they would prefer to stay the way they are than to spend the rest of the week feeling like a social experiment.
If I ever get catch up in a situation where I am in a deep mess and the only help coming my way is from a guy who would definitely record everything and post it online, first thing I'll do is weigh how important the problem is before making a decision. In a situation where it doesn't hold that much impact in my wellbeing, I am definitely rejecting that offer. However, if it is something I that will probably shape a higher percentage of my life moving forward, I am accepting it without putting much thought into it after all in this social media space nothing really lasts for long as people are always anticipating waiting for the next big thing so it won't even take long for them to move from my story. Their motive might not be straight but in the end everybody's leaving with a victory smile on their faces...... Thank you.
