Back in the day, having a job meant that an employee had to wake up very early in the morning, get dressed, struggle through traffic until he hops on bus heading towards the direction of work, going into an office or wherever it is he becomes productive and spends hours there until it is time to go home. This was the standard norm for years until things began to evolve thanks to technology and slowly the question of whether or not coming to the office every single weekday was truly necessary for productivity to occur. As answers for this question began to pop up a lot of people soon discovered that they can stay at their very own comfort and still get the same amount of work done brought about the rise of an arrangement that is now known as "Remote Work". This system slowly changed the preexisting beliefs of employment which implies that for an individual to work for their livelihood, he/she has to be physically present at their place of work to do so.
Ever since having remote jobs became a thing to today's society, a lot of people have shown interest participating in its operations. This is because it comes with a lot of interesting features like being able to work in comfort without worrying about waking up really early in the morning to prepare for work, transportation costs, traffic issues and other factors that can affect one's finances. All you have to do is just sit whereever you want, operate whatever gadget with access to the internet and start making money.
This sounds like the dream job of anybody who wants to do better with limited cause. It has even provided the opportunity to even work outside your state of residence or country even without leaving your room ensuring that people can actually live their life's even while they are working. The benefits of remote jobs are limitless, however it still comes with a question hanging above our heads : If Remote jobs become the primary form of employment, what happens to those jobs that actually need people to be in the office?.
This is actually very difficult to digest because when think about it as much as remote jobs are creating job opportunities with comfort, it is creating discomfort and drop in revenue for other sectors that require face to face interaction. Let's look at it from this angle, when people to work, a lot of them have to pay for their transport to the office, the building in their office has other staffs like cleaners, security guards and people who do other type of jobs. When people begin to work from home without having any need to go to the office, some of the staff who work as guards, securities and the rest will definitely lose their jobs and a physical location for the job might not even exist entirely, taxi drivers also lose customers since people don't need to leave their homes to work anymore clearly proving the one man's food is another man's poison adage.
I discovered recently that over a thousand employees in Disney were laid off work because it was discovered that the very job that entire sector were dedicating months to can actually be accomplished by just a handful of individuals from their bedroom. What a wreck, imagine going to school for years only to discover that the very thing you spent years of life studying was going to be replaced by something way better.
Nevertheless, despite the threat remote jobs poses to traditional work, it can never really replace because the economy will definitely adapt and find a way to create a balance. This is because there are countless jobs that actually need humans to be present for it to function effectively. Another thing I am certain about is how saturated the remote job space is right now. In my own country Nigeria, it is way easier to get physical job than a remote so after people try hard to get one and eventually fail, they will definitely settle for what's available. So in my opinion remote jobs can actually operate excellently in today's world without causing irreparable damage to 9 -5 office jobs... Thank you.
