Remember those cherry tomato seeds I nearly killed? The ones I overwatered and turned into a floating disaster? Seeds going everywhere. Containers falling apart. A complete mess that the wife told me to just give up on?
Well, they're producing fruit now. I've got about 5 or 6 plants that survived. They're about a foot tall now. And I'm seeing about 6 little bitty green tomatoes hanging on the vines. Not ready to pick yet. But they're there. Real tomatoes that grew from seeds I almost destroyed.
I'm calling that a win.
These plants have been through it. Started with me flooding them during planting. Then days of neglect when I wasn't feeling well. Then transplanting them to pots when they were barely hanging on. They did their part. Now I'm finally doing mine. Watering them. Watching them. Waiting for those little green tomatoes to turn red. Can't wait to eat the first one. It's going to taste like redemption.
Sometimes the things you almost give up on surprise you. You mess up. You think it's over. But you keep going anyway. Keep watering. Keep adjusting. Keep showing up. And eventually, something grows. There's probably a metaphor in there somewhere.
Still making progress on the shed and garage situation.
The goal is simple. Shed things in the shed. Garage things in the garage. Shit I don't use out of both. Sounds easy. It's not. So far we've gotten rid of empty boxes and old containers that were just taking up space. Old furniture that nobody was using anymore. Knick knacks that were collecting dust. Old hardware and random stuff that's been sitting there for who knows how long.
All of it. Gone. Some went to the curb. Some went to the dump. Some went to people who could actually use it. Still more to tackle. Continue cleaning it out. Go through more stuff. Get rid of what's not needed. Straighten up what's staying.
The goat trails through the garage have turned into actual walkable paths. I can find things now. I can get to things now. That's progress. The shed is coming along too. Making room for what belongs there. Getting rid of what doesn't.
It's not glamorous work. It's hot. It's tiring. Some days I can only do a few minutes before I need to stop. But every time I look at what it was versus what it's becoming, I see the difference. That's how most things work. Small steps. Consistent effort. Progress you don't notice until you step back and compare.
Tomatoes. Garage. Shed. Me. All works in progress. All getting a little better every day.
What are you making progress on lately?

Joe
