The garden's fleeting star: A flower that lives life to the fullest for a day[Eng-Spn]

Flowers right in front of the bus stop, on the sidewalk; photo taken with a Redmi phone by @cositav.

Yes, my friends—that simple little plant adorning the sidewalk stop with beautiful flowers. They are perennial herbs or shrubs. The leaves are elliptic, ovate, ovate-lanceolate, obovate, or oblong-spatulate, with an acuminate or obtuse apex and an attenuated or acute base; the margins are entire, undulate, crenate, or dentate. Inflorescences vary in form—terminal or axillary—or the flowers may be solitary; these are often large and showy, regular, sometimes curved, and either pedicellate or sessile. The corolla is generally funnel-shaped—bluish, white, yellow, or red—with a usually narrow tube and an expanded portion that is often campanulate. The fruits are club-shaped, elliptic, or cylindrical. Missouri Botanical Garden - Plant Finder

It grows to a height of about 30 cm and spreads to two or three times that size. It inhabits dry soils, open woodlands, prairies, and fields—which explains why I frequently see it in the open, nature-rich areas where I travel.

It is notable for its tubular, bell-shaped flowers, which reach up to 3 cm in length and feature five rounded lobes. It blooms continuously from May to October; although each flower lasts only a single day, it gives way to new blooms as it withers. This is a fascinating detail: the flower displays its full splendor and beauty for just one day—its entire lifespan. Curious about this, I researched the flower's life—a single day that constitutes a whole lifetime for it—and discovered this wonderful cycle:

The day in the life of a Ruellia flower is like the story of a tiny shooting star in the garden:

06:00 AM — Awakening: As the sun rises, the flower bud—nourished throughout the night—opens fully. It unfurls its five purplish-blue lobes, forming a perfect, fresh, tubular bell shape brimming with new nectar.

09:00 AM to 12:00 PM — Peak activity: This is its moment of greatest brilliance. Drawn by its tubular shape and color, bees and butterflies come to visit. The flower offers up its nectar, and in return, the insects carry away pollen clinging to their legs to pollinate other flowers.

03:00 PM — Beginning to withdraw: After fulfilling its mission under the midday sun, the flower begins to lose moisture. Its petals gently start to wilt and close, having spent all their radiance in just a few hours.

06:00 PM — Farewell: As evening falls, the flower detaches cleanly from the stem and drops to the ground.

Night — The changing of the guard: While today's flower rests on the earth, just above in the leaf axil, the next bud quietly finishes maturing, ready to repeat the exact same magic at dawn.

A short yet flawless cycle: it lives for only a single day, but it lives that day to the fullest. How strange time is, and how fleeting life can be.

Despite living for only one day, it still requires specific care and cultivation:

It needs soil rich in organic matter, mixed with some coarse sand to ensure good drainage, as it does not tolerate waterlogging. It withstands brief droughts, so it is better to underwater than to overwater. Watering should be significantly reduced during autumn and winter.

It propagates easily via seeds or cuttings (obtained by pruning the tips). Furthermore, it stands out for its high resistance to common pests and diseases.

Although it was once little known in conventional gardening, its use in landscaping has grown significantly thanks to the rise of native plants. This means that, even if it isn't a highly commercial flower, its great resilience and ease of propagation often make it ideal for urban landscapes. That is why we frequently see Ruellia displaying its majestic presence during the ongoing renovations of public squares and parks.

I am happy to observe nature and learn something new every day.
