🔍 The opening frame (what it's about)

This is one of those films with such a discreet opening that simple curiosity makes you want to know what happens. Its start is the subtle voice of a local radio station talking about coyotes and announcing the imminent demolition of a baseball field to build a school.

Without revealing too much of the plot, the film follows two amateur teams that gather to play the last game on that ball field. However, far from the clichés of conventional sports cinema, the film pauses. It dedicates itself to observing the players, listening to their conversations, and portraying the passing of an afternoon that, for none of them, is in a hurry to end.

🎥 The reason to turn off your phone and look at the screen

This is a film designed to slow down the hustle and bustle of everyday life and demonstrate that an ordinary afternoon can become transcendental simply by happening. Don't expect the same adrenaline as a classic sports drama, and don't worry if you know nothing about baseball; its magic lies in the details and in that fleeting sensation that time is slipping away from us.

Don't look for relentless action; you won't find it here.

But if you crave a calm, peculiar experience touched by melancholy, with a thread where the ball game sneaks in little by little, you'll find your best option here.

The most memorable moments are not great plays, but the passing jokes and the small quirks of a cast that reveals itself without the need for explanatory dialogue. The result is a dry and friendly humor that generates an intimacy almost as if one felt they were sitting on the bench, listening to the conversation of some funny guys.

💡 What everyone overlooked

Shot at the authentic Soldiers Field in Massachusetts, this fictional film about a ball field about to be demolished hides a real obsession of director Carson Lund, who after visiting more than a hundred locations, found the perfect place to tell the end of an era.

But the film's magic goes beyond the location. Lund, who grew up playing baseball in New Hampshire, poured his own experiences in adult recreational leagues into bringing the characters to life. Even the fan Franny is inspired by a neighbor from his childhood.

To make the game feel authentic, the script team didn't improvise the game: they designed a real scorecard, decided every play and the final score.

This rigid structure was, ironically, what allowed improvisation to fly in the dialogue.

Visually, production designer Erik Lund created worn and ill-fitting uniforms that flee from polished period reconstruction to anchor the story in the nineties with a timeless touch. The cast includes former Red Sox pitcher Bill "Spaceman" Lee, who, true to his style, broke the script to bring real baseball anecdotes.

And there's an intimate nod: in a brief scene, Lund wears his own youth league jersey, sharing the frame with his own father.

Technically, the film breathes thanks to Greg Tango's cinematography, which opted for open shots to capture how friendship and enjoyment of a sport look before the camera within a ball diamond. The sound design, which took months of mixing, decenters the voices so the viewer feels surrounded by the players.

As a final touch, the voice of the local radio belongs to documentary master Frederick Wiseman, who narrates from invisibility to suggest an entire town beyond the stands.

💬 Is it worth the ticket? (Opinion)

Its greatest virtue lies in a warm, funny, and deeply human gaze. The film finds emotion in everyday gestures and banal conversations that any other production would discard without a second thought. There is no emotional manipulation or cheap shots; the film blindly trusts that the viewer will end up growing fond of the atmosphere and its characters just for the pleasure of observing them.

There are stretches where the film feels more like spending an afternoon on a bench watching a group of strangers pass by than following a story with narrative drive.

It is not a film for everyone, and frankly, it shouldn't be recommended if you're looking for intense plot or dramatic climaxes.

This is contemplative cinema, with a discreet type of humor and the melancholy that emanates from breaking traditions that are carried out many times without the hesitation that is done only as a way of distancing ourselves from the automation we carry out day by day. And so, without asking permission or falling into sentimentality, Eephus will be good company for a weekend afternoon.

And from here a good question arises: do you know that sport? If you know it, do you play it? Or do you only consume it?
