We move to the late eighties to meet the Smarts, a family that runs a small regional theater. Add to that the task of raising Lester and Derrick, two brothers with such different personalities and aspirations that their clashes are constant; they can't agree on how to face the future or on the place family occupies in their lives.
While Buddy harbors the dream of reaching Broadway with an optimism that withstands everything, Macy acts as the family anchor: she handles the finances, the emotional stability, and makes sure everyone stays afloat. She is the grounding force, the one with her feet firmly on the ground while her husband looks at the stars.
Through sharp dialogue, comedic moments, and tensions that simmer slowly, the film portrays with tenderness and insight that family everydayness and the eternal pulse between domestic life and the noise of show business.

Los puntos más fuertes de la película son Bryan Cranston y Allison Janney, quienes en realidad no necesitan presentación. Su palmarés abarca desde ganadores y nominaciones al Óscar hasta ganadores y nominados a los premios Tony (no refleja el orden de importancia si es que existe), lo cual resulta bastante curioso, pues gran parte de la historia gira en torno al teatro.

These artists and their vast experience bring a chemistry that shows on screen. Their characters, Buddy and Macy, are transparent in their flaws, their desires, their differences, their common ground, and their eccentricities; in short, they are human, but very easy to love.
Their performances are the guide that keeps the film balanced between the dense dramas of their teenage children, professional issues, and the emotional ones within the marriage, even in the most chaotic moments.
And it is through these performances that the audience will feel identified in some of the many situations they will witness in this film.

Si enumerara algunos datos interesantes sobre Everything's Going to Be Great, el primero sería que su guionista, Steven Rogers (el mismo de I, Tonya, que muy seguramente pasará por aquí), basó gran parte del argumento en su propia infancia. Su padre dirigía producciones en un teatro regional, y de ahí surgió la inspiración para retratar la agitada dinámica de la familia protagonista. Pero el componente autobiográfico no termina ahí: Rogers confesó en varias entrevistas que escribió el papel de Macy pensando directamente en Allison Janney, porque su madre real era considerablemente más joven que su padre, un detalle que acabó trasladándose a la pantalla con naturalidad.
El rodaje tuvo lugar en la provincia canadiense de Ontario entre abril y julio de 2023, aunque no fue un proceso sencillo. Justo en mitad de la producción estalló la huelga de guionistas, lo que impidió que Rogers estuviera presente en el set para hacer ajustes sobre la marcha. Así que toda la responsabilidad de darle vida al texto recayó sobre el director Jon S. Baird y el reparto, que tuvieron que afinar la interpretación sin su creador a la vista. But the autobiographical component doesn't end there: Rogers confessed in several interviews that he wrote the role of Macy with Allison Janney directly in mind, because his real mother was considerably younger than his father, a detail that was naturally transferred to the screen.
Filming took place in the Canadian province of Ontario between April and July 2023, though it wasn't a smooth process. Right in the middle of production, the writers' strike broke out, which prevented Rogers from being on set to make adjustments on the fly. So the entire responsibility of bringing the text to life fell on director Jon S. Baird and the cast, who had to refine their performances without its creator around. Even so, there were moments that left a mark: the director and the entire technical team confess they were left speechless the day Chris Cooper recorded his scenes as brother Walter, a performance that, by all accounts, deserves special attention.
The film premiered at the Tribeca Festival and, although it had a very quiet run through a limited selection of theaters distributed by Searchlight Pictures and eOne, it soon made the leap to streaming and VOD, where it will surely find its audience.
🎭 Estilo
La película construye su estilo tragicómico al igual que sobre los cimientos del teatro clásico, esa sensación de que el telón nunca se cierra del todo y los personajes viven bajo el foco incluso en la intimidad. Las relaciones familiares oscilan entre la tragedia y la comedia con una naturalidad desconcertante, y los Smart no sienten sus emociones: las interpretan, las nombran, las etiquetan en pantalla como si fueran acotaciones de un libreto. Ese gesto, que podría parecer un simple artificio narrativo, se revela en realidad como un mecanismo de defensa: una manera de poner distancia entre ellos y una verdad que, mirada de frente, resultaría demasiado cruda para ser soportada.
The film builds its tragicomic style on the foundations of classical theater, that feeling that the curtain never fully closes and the characters live under the spotlight even in intimacy. Family relationships oscillate between tragedy and comedy with a disconcerting naturalness, and the Smarts don't just feel their emotions: they perform them, name them, label them on screen as if they were stage directions from a script. That gesture, which might seem like a simple narrative device, actually reveals itself as a defense mechanism: a way of putting distance between themselves and a truth that, faced head-on, would be too raw to bear.
💬 Opinión
Everything's Going to Be Great es una película extraña, de esas que no sabes muy bien si abrazar o mantener a distancia. Su narrativa tiene altibajos constantes; en ciertos tramos fluye con una naturalidad envidiable, y de repente el caos se apodera de la pantalla hasta volverse casi incómodo de mirar. El problema más evidente es que el clímax llega demasiado pronto; cuando todavía esperas que la historia te sorprenda, ya ha dado todo lo que tenía que dar. Lo que viene después se siente como una prolongación forzada, un esfuerzo por cerrar cabos que ya no necesitaban atarse, aunque se entiende que las circunstancias de producción (con la huelga de guionistas de por medio) pudieron afectar el resultado final.
Es una lástima, porque el arranque promete muchísimo. Los primeros compases de la película tienen esa chispa que hace que te enganches a los personajes y a su caos doméstico. Pero ese impulso se diluye, y lo que pudo ser una comedia dramática redonda se queda en un ejercicio interesante pero fallido. Por todo esto, y sin ánimo de pontificar, diría que no es una película para todos los públicos: yo la recomendaría a partir de los 16 años, no por moralina, sino porque su tono y sus complejidades emocionales piden un espectador con cierta madurez.
Pero, como siempre, cada lector es libre de formar su propio criterio. Aquí solo damos una opinión, nunca una sentencia.
Everything's Going to Be Great is a strange film, the kind you're not quite sure whether to embrace or keep at arm's length. Its narrative has constant ups and downs; at certain points it flows with enviable naturalness, and suddenly chaos takes over the screen until it becomes almost uncomfortable to watch. The most evident problem is that the climax arrives too soon; when you're still expecting the story to surprise you, it has already given everything it had to give. What comes after feels like a forced extension, an effort to tie up loose ends that no longer needed to be tied, although it's understandable that the production circumstances (with the writers' strike in the middle) could have affected the final result.
It's a shame, because the start promises so much. The first moments of the film have that spark that hooks you onto the characters and their domestic chaos. But that momentum fades, and what could have been a solid dramedy becomes an interesting but flawed exercise. For all this, and without meaning to pontificate, I'd say it's not a film for all audiences: I would recommend it for ages 16 and up, not out of prudishness, but because its tone and emotional complexities require a viewer with a certain maturity.
