A Warm Bowl of Bak Kut Teh for a Cold and Rainy Evening

The weather today was quite funny because the morning started with warm sunshine and some really beautiful clouds in the sky. I was actually feeling so happy about it that I even made a Snaps post saying how much I enjoyed the weather.

And then noon came... and suddenly the sky turned grey and heavy rain started falling all over us LOL.

So I guess that beautiful morning weather was just a teaser before the rain arrived. Not cool man! 😂

But to be fair, I am still thankful for the rain because the weather has been getting really warm lately. A sudden rainy day is actually something that we need once in a while. The only problem for me is that whenever it rains, the temperature inside our office becomes even colder because of the air-conditioning.

I already had a cup of hot coffee during the afternoon hoping that it would warm me up, but apparently that wasn't enough. By the time I finished work, I already knew what kind of dinner I wanted.

Something hot. Something comforting. And preferably... soup!

So one of the best options that came to my mind was Bak Kut Teh!

I ordered a bowl for SGD 6.80 together with rice, and looking at that steaming bowl already made me feel better. The dish was quite simple: a light broth, some fresh green garnishing, and of course the most important part—those beautiful pieces of pork ribs!

The broth was exactly what I needed for this kind of weather. It was light but still flavorful, with that nice peppery kick together with the aroma of garlic. Every sip gave me that warm feeling inside, which was perfect after spending most of the day feeling cold.

I actually couldn't stop sipping the soup LOL.

My eating pattern became something like this: bite of pork, spoonful of rice, sip of soup... and repeat!

The pork ribs were also cooked nicely. The meat was tender while still having a slight chew to it, which I actually prefer. I don't really like meat that becomes so soft that it completely loses its texture. These ribs still had some bite while remaining tender enough to enjoy easily.

Of course, I also wanted something extra on the side, so I ordered the preserved vegetables for SGD 2.00.

At first, I thought the portion looked a little expensive for the price. It wasn't exactly a huge serving. But once I tasted it, my opinion changed quite quickly.

It was really flavorful!

The preserved vegetables didn't taste like they were simply boiled in water. They tasted more like they had been braised in a rich savory sauce. There was even a flavor that reminded me slightly of prawns, so I'm wondering if they used some dried prawns or maybe a little prawn paste while cooking it.

Whatever they added, it worked really well. The deep salty and savory flavor of the preserved vegetables also paired nicely with the lighter Bak Kut Teh broth and plain rice.

Overall, this was exactly the kind of dinner that matched today's weather. A warm bowl of peppery soup, tender pork ribs, rice, and a flavorful side dish was enough to make this cold rainy evening much more enjoyable.

Sometimes, the weather really decides what kind of food I'm craving. And tonight, Bak Kut Teh was definitely the right choice.

Bon appétit! 😋

Send one rainy cloud this way. And that Bak Kut Teh looka nice, but I would probably just eat all the meat and like one teaspoon of rice. :D
