It has been a few days since my last food post, so I think it is about time that I share another meal again! Today’s lunch is actually my latest food discovery, and somehow this simple bowl of fish soup managed to reignite my liking for a nice warm soup again hehehe.
Recently, my meals have been quite predictable. I have been eating plenty of fried food, mostly chicken and pork, and after doing that for some time I started thinking that maybe I should add more variety to what I eat.
Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy fried food LOL. But I also want to balance my meals with other kinds of food every now and then. So today, I wanted something lighter and comforting. Since I normally go for chicken or pork, seafood sounded like a nice change.
And that was how I ended up trying the Jiak Song Fish Soup!
I ordered their #11 Mixed Fish Soup with Rice, which costs SGD 7.50. Looking at the price, I thought it was already quite reasonable. Of course, the next question was whether the serving portion and quality would actually make it worth ordering.
A few minutes after placing my order, the stall owner called me and told me that they had already run out of Batang fish LOL.
They offered to replace it with another type of fish instead, and I gladly agreed. I didn’t want to make things difficult for them. Sometimes these little situations happen at food stalls, so I think being flexible makes things easier for everyone.
When my meal finally arrived, my first impression was already positive.
The serving was just nice! I got a generous bowl of soup, rice, and a separate bowl filled with freshly fried fish pieces. Just by looking at everything on my tray, I already felt that my SGD 7.50 was well spent.
I especially appreciated how they separated the fried fish from the soup. If they had placed it directly into the broth, the crispy coating would probably become soggy after a few minutes. Instead, I could enjoy the fish while it was still hot and crispy, or dip it into the soup whenever I wanted.
But the highlight for me was definitely the soup.
The broth was light but flavorful, exactly the kind of soup that I enjoy. It wasn’t overly rich or heavy, which made it easy to keep drinking spoonful after spoonful. Inside were tofu, vegetables, tomatoes, and some fried egg as well. I also liked how the vegetables were cut into smaller pieces because they were easier to eat together with everything else.
My favorite way of enjoying the meal was pouring some soup over my rice and adding a piece of fried fish. The rice absorbed the flavorful broth while the fried fish provided that nice crispy texture.
Simple combination, but very satisfying!
Overall, I really enjoyed this lunch. For SGD 7.50, I think the serving portion was reasonable and the quality was good. More importantly, this meal reminded me that a warm bowl of soup can be just as satisfying as the fried food that I usually crave.
Whenever I pass by the Upper Boon Keng area again, I will definitely consider coming back for another bowl.
Bon appétit!
